Adding solid infill between "parts" on a multi material print

One of the reasons that I purchased the XL with multiple heads is to create composite prints. In these prints I would be mixing materials and not just colors. In most of my designs I design in a hard line where the part is expected to transition from one material to another. In this transition zone I want to have a "top" on the old material and a "bottom" on the new material to increase the bonding between them. Does anyone know how to get the slicer to do this with other than using the insert solid infill every x layers setting? With the settings that I have found the slicer seems to be too smart and blends the infill together for each material.

Please tell me that I am missing something obvious.

There are several different ways to do this in Slic3r, I don't know your level of knowledge with Slic3r so I'll show what I think may be the easiest way.

You will need to be in advanced mode to do this.

In this example I'll use a cube.

Right Click [Add Shape] : Box.

Then slice the Box, decide what layer range you want to add your solid layers to.

Go to the Object menu, Right click on the "Shape-Box", Select "Height range Modifier" from the resulting menu.

Input the height range you want the solid layers to be on. I used 11.00-11.80mm for my example.

Then in the object menu Right click on Range and select Add settings>Infill,

and from the resulting dialog box, check "Solid infill threshold area" and click OK.

A box called Layer range Settings to modify will appear, and should have a default of Zero,

if you hover over the words in that box you will see a very short explanation of what this setting does.

Assuming you have followed my example you could just add 555 in the field or higher, and it would produce 4 solid layers

with an all important bridging layer in the rage specified.

You can use this technique with Shape Modifiers as well.

when using this technique with HRM's you can also have it only apply to certain size shapes in the same object.

Play with it, have fun.

Hope this makes sense to you,

Good Luck

I believe you're looking for Print Settings > Multiple Extruders > Advanced > Interface Shells (checkbox). I was looking for the same thing!

RE:

Not an argument, but I will state that while the Interface Shells: check box offers this functionality, it has substantially less variability to the method I describe. (variability) meaning adjustable functionality, (worth!) However its an experience call. I would never send someone in this direction, based on my experience.

It is however available as a choice, and I mentioned there are several.

Good Luck
