interesting issue I'm having. 

I'm getting repeatable surface defects on the XL that do not exist in the Gcode and do not appear in the slicer tool movements and preview.

I've had this one print i have tried 3 times now where i have changed slicer settings after seeing very noticeable surface defects.

example on a flat surface there will be a very tall bump out where non-exists in the preview of the slicer nor the gcode. but it will be in a pattern that you can see in other areas of the print.

the error in the completed part is repeatable and has a very strange pattern almost like a fractal. were it lasts for about 1-2 inches in length and it starts as a progression pattern of a small bump that gets larger and larger and wider as it goes almost like a the belts have the wrong tension and you get that rippling except only in these spots, and in the same pattern. this also does not occur on the entire part only in a few areas i could cut out that part and place it next to another errored area and it is like a finger print matches the same error in the surface.

its like the firmware is bugging out when it takes in this GCODE sequence.

If i run the same slice on a MK3 machine it does not happen only on the XL.

I'm thinking this is yet another firmware issue maybe some kind of memory leak or a bug with a certain sequence of Gcodes together.

I had a computer printer years ago that had a firmware bug in the graphics mode and it acted like this when a certain sequence of escape codes came together and caused a mistake during a print.

in most cases people may not notice this if your large print is getting sanded or vapor smoothed and then painted this would be a non-issue and you may just attribute the defect to it just being 3d printed and not an issue with the printer itself, not having another machine to test against you would never see the issue handled differently.

the XL is so frustrating, prusa has become so frustrating. 

they really need to fix their internal problems and evolve because at some point all of us will just buy alternatives that are better overall.

sorry this is more like a rant. 

if you notice some weird surface defects and you double check your STLs and look at your slicer preview and can't understand why the defect occurred it might be this issue I'm posting about.

trying to figure out how to take a picture because what i can see with my eye is getting washed out by the camera. stay tuned.

last night was a little nuts, still can't figure out how to get the camera to capture the issue however i found another person that posted a similar defect and I'm waiting to find out if they are using a XL or MK4S machine. i also want to run the same Slicer and STL settings through my MK3S+

Many print quality issues are common to all machines.  For example, slight warping, which causes a messy ripple pattern on the top surface of a print can happen with any FDM printer and almost always has an intermediate cause, poor bed adhesion of the very first layer, but the ultimate cause can be one or more things none of them restricted to a single model of printer.

Now this *might* be your issue but it might not; a picture helps us narrow it down much faster.

Usually it's best to turn the camera flash OFF and illuminate the defect from the side with a low angled flashlight.  For the best chance of a useful answer take one picture of the part still on the print sheet, another detailing the problem and a third showing the underside of the print.

ok where did i go?

I have been running tests. I found out this is not a firmware issue, its a Slicer 2.8.1 issue.

i ran tests on the XL and MK3S machines. the problem kept going regardless of machine.

MK3S showed the same issue

i decided to go back a few generations of slicer and see what happens.

2.6 supported the XL. Ran the STL through 2.6 and started to output on a MK3S machine, the part takes 12 hours to run and i wanted a full run, because besides running tests i also need the part!

with the part 75% complete the surface defect is gone for the first time. i have run this STL 5 times now on various machines.

the issue is with slicer 2.8.1

i'm running some more tests after this. it is a rabbit hole.
