RE: USB error mid print

Ahh, I thought it didn't work at all.  As far as not being able to register all 5 temps, I can't seem to get that to work on Prusa Connect or Link, so no loss there.

RE: USB error mid print

Well, I just had 3 successful multicolor prints, but on the 4th one, it paused 🙁  Really thought I had it figured out 🙁

Note:  This was a multitool print - 4 tool

Things I tried.

  • Used the original Prusa USB drive
  • Copied the files directly to the drive - no network transfer

When the error appear, if you remove and insert again the usb it should resume (click resume).

It's annoying but it works

This actually did not work for me. It did not offer the option to resume. In a spontaneous thought of genius, i just cut the power to trigger a power panic. When i turned the printer on again… it could resume the print. What an adrenaline rush!

Hope this helps someone else who might encounter this issue.

Hi!

Just to chip in. Same thing happens to me as well. And it is happening both on 4.7.2 and 5.1.0_alpha2 firmware.

Best regards

I'm curious, does Prusa tech support monitor these threads, or should I just keep pestering them via support chat until this issue is resolved?

No Prusa staff monitor these forums, they are purely user-to-user...

So I've done multiple long prints now without tool change and no issues whatsoever, one was 14 hours. Also tried a print with two toolheads and color change, it was supposed to be about 2 hours, failed at least 4 times before it finally completed.

I contacted support via email, explained the issue and provided a link to this thread. It took a week for a reply and they are asking for pictures, firmware version, everything provided in this thread, not so good.

RE: USB error mid print

they are asking for pictures

Yeah, my favorite was the support person that asked for multiple pictures of the INSIDE of the USB socket.  It was, of course, in perfect condition.  This is a software issues as far as I'm concerned, not a hardware one.  It will be corrected once this is no longer in the "known issues" section of the firmware release page:

"USB flash drive disconnect can occur. Try reinserting the drive to continue using it. In the case of G-code streaming, the system might not be able to resume printing. Should that happen, please copy the file on the USB drive instead."

I'm not doing any streaming (and in fact, due to all the issues I'm having with the XL I haven't even bothered to set up wifi yet).  So this is just a "gcode is already there and it fails to read it" situation for me.

RE: USB error mid print

Same thing happened to me, on both the original Prusa USB stick and another (Tesla USB stick) I tried, and on both 4.7.2 and 5.1.0 alpha firmware.  An earlier 2-color print I did finished fine, but the 5-color print I tried yesterday paused at least a dozen times.  Then, it paused again, I unplugged the USB stick and put it pack, and it panic'd with blue-screen-of-death (picture below) and then on reset failed to realize it was mid-print and I lost the print 🙁 The print was looking so beautiful too, despite all the pausing (I would manually remove the big melted plastic blobs when it had stayed stopped for a long time).

Since this is a known issue, I wonder if they have an idea what the root cause is... it's spooky to have such problems: I would think reading files from USB sticks is a mature technology by now.

And we seem not to know of any workarounds, except reseating the USB stick and hoping no panic happens?

RE: USB error mid print

Received a reply from tech support today, "Please install the latest FW 5.0.1 and let me know if the issue persists.". So I check and 5.0.1 is the MK4 release, 4.7.5 was released today but has nothing in the release notes referring to a USB error.

https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware-Buddy/releases/tag/v4.7.5

Pretty sure it's a waste of time but may try it. I'm quickly losing faith, I always thought Prusa stood apart with their support, not so sure that's case anymore.

As I see from release notes, 4.7.5 update is just new bootloader, so nothing new for our problem.

Best regards

I believe this is a firmware bug but can be linked to settings in the slicer. I had the problem when printing parts using an older project file which changed some settings away from the default for the IS profile in 2.7 beta. If you have this problem I suggest checking all setting which have changed (orange arrow signifies this).

OK I have a possible workaround-ish!  Try aiming a fan blowing hard at the back of the LCD controller circuit board, on the side where the USB stick plugs in?

This made a massive difference for me.  Before this, the print was stopping every 5-10 minutes, for the first ~2 hours.  Then I deployed the fan and it ran for the remaining ~10 hours.  It did stop once during that time, so the fan wasn't perfect, but it very much cut down on how often this problem happened.

But I am just one datapoint.  I'm curious to see if this helps others?

Interesting, I have a thermal camera, I'll fire it up when I get this error again and see if anything in that general area is hot.

I agree with you, but I think it has to do with multi-color prints. I just finished a 18 hour, single color, print using 4 tools - 2 PETG with spool join, and 2 PLA with spool join, and zero problems. The only time I have had a problem is when using multiple, painted on colors and the problem shows up randomly, often after only a couple of color changes.

RE: USB error mid print

It usually crashes at the USB connect, or media_prefetch task, which has to do with reading data from the USB driver (and doing all the USB-host side stuff). The electronics on the LCD circuit board where the USB plugs in, that is overheating. Usb cable extender or higher quality USB stick like Swissbit might help, so that USB stick does not fail due to heat it cannot handle.
