Problem with wipe tower

Just finished assembling my XL 5 head printer. Did a few single tool head prints and all was good.

Next step was to try a simple 2 color test - 6mm dia white cylinder inside a 10x10x10 green cube.  The wipe tower keeps getting knocked loose within the first few layers. Seems like a gob of filament is left on the tower, then the next color change starts to loosen the tower and eventually it is completely free. The cube/cylinder continues to be printed but there is a mess of spaghetti where the wipe tower is supposed to be.

Latest released firmware. Latest released Prusa Slicer. Default settings.

Nozzle wipers are installed correctly and don't seem to have a bunch of filament accumulating there.

Is there some setting to resolve the wipe tower problem? Thanks

RE: Problem with wipe tower

Assuming your nozzle is clean throughout the probing process for accurate readings, you may need to manually slightly lower live-z in the slicer if your tower isn't adhering well. The textured sheet usually needs a bit more squish than the other two and the loadcell system doesn't automatically take that into account.

I'll try that and also try using the non-textured sheet. But I don't think it's an adhering problem. Looks like when the nozzle came over to do a wipe, it left a blob on the tower. Then the next pass hit it. I believe I have the nozzle wipers installed correctly. They slightly depress when the nextruder returns to the dock and there is no ooze around the nozzle when docked waiting for its next turn.

Is there a setting to add more retraction when the nextruder returns to the dock?

What filament are you using? Is it dry? Filament with moisture content can expand when heated and cause excess oozing and messiness. Try with a PETG or similarly moisture resistant filaments. You'll probably have better results.

Running Prusament PLA and it is fairly new, kept sealed. No stringing problems that I would associate with moisture issues.

I'd strongly suggest using the Smooth or Satin PEI sheet.

I think it is the inherent ‘friable’ nature of the wipe tower.  It exacerbates any kind of stringing issues with the filament.  When I was running the wipe towers, I did add the cone so that it was pretty wide and added some stability.  Then I just stopped running the wipe towers altogether.  I really don’t see the need for them.  I’ve run some pretty fine features and print on the XL5 and they all came out great without the tower.

I just did another print without the wipe tower and using the smooth sheet. I also adjusted the nozzle wipers closer by about 3/4 turn.

The print came out very nicely. Going to try the original cube again with this setup.

Thanks for all of the recommendations. Two-color print with text
