RE: Noisy XL
That’s really positive to hear. I’ll hold off updating until a few people have run it. Appreciate your feedback
RE: Noisy XL
The first alpha has just been released, I installed it straight away and started the calibration. The printer was loudest at approx. 90mm/s with the old firmware.I did a test print before and after at this speed and it's a night and day difference. The loud chattering has completely disappeared and the printer is considerably quieter overall. Only the bed and fast travel moves have remained the same.

If he interested to see how the print quality increases. The prints are good of my XL, but not as good as my MK4. Going this update will bring it up to par with the MK4.
RE:
just installed v 6.0.0.alpha. after calibration of phase stepping the print is almost dead silent, first print in progress and i can barely hear it standing right next to the printer. Octoprint is not working right with the alpha has a huge Z offset above the bed on first layer , but USB stick works perfect
RE: Noisy XL
in enclosure door open which should maximize the sound.
RE: Noisy XL
I ran a small print last night to test basic operation. Running a larger print now. I do have an enclosure and have sound dampening on metal plates. Observations:
- Previously any angular or circular nextruder movement generated substantial resonance, it is now slightly above audible level (falls in the middle of speech db)
- Prior audio measurements (6' away) were 55db to 65db (even higher before I installed EnXLosure, anti-vibration feet and sound deadening pads)
- With new firmware, actual printing db (when filament is laid down) is appx 41db
- When the nextruder performs a non-print repositioning, the db briefly jumps to 49db
- When the nextruder docks/undocks and moves to print/calibration position the volume level is unchanged
- There is a slight difference, when laying filament, in slight X resonance between inside perimeter, outside perimeter and support material (snug) when the long edge of a model is parallel to the front of the printer bed. Support material printing is the quietest.
- Initial observations shows slightly better quality for tall vertical surfaces
- I re-ran the calibration step and the reported improvement percentages were virtually identical compared to the first run
I'm extremely happy with the new firmware, and so are other folks that have had to endure the screeching and grinding! I'm using Prusa Slicer with input shaping and .32 speed.
RE: Noisy XL
I'm installing tonight. I've been avoiding printing at night because it could be heard in my bedroom from my basement.
I really appreciate the continuous improvement.
RE: Noisy XL
Can you slow it’s ‘not printing’ repositioning speed down to keep it quiet all the way through the print?
RE: Noisy XL
It's a tradeoff for me. I print a lot of tall models, where I'm using painted seams, so changing the repositioning speed extends the total print time too much. Honestly, at max 49db, the repositioning sound level is just fine with me and others nearby as it is soooo much quieter than before the firmware upgrade. YMMV
HORRAYYY! ... IT is quiet(er) now
Hey folks,
they just released a new (alpha)-Firmware: https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware-Buddy/releases/tag/v6.0.0-alpha
I tried it now for several hours and IT WORKS!!!
My XL is now nearly so quiet like my "Sidewinder X1".
Now the only 2 things that are still louder are the Z-axis in common and it's "clonk" when moving back to the original position at Z-hops.
But don't forget... It's still APLHA!
RE: Noisy XL
The 6.0.0 firmware update solved all of my noise complaints. It's super quiet now imo.
I made no other mods, just updated the firmware and all of the obnoxious vibrations and rattles are gone.
Thank you Prusa and community.
