RE: Prusa XL Build Thread - Two Head Version

The next steps are th install the print heads and add the side panels.  This took less than 30 minutes.  The print heads coem preassembled and basicall need pluged in. The side panels are metal sheets were easy to assemble but need more screws than the the top of bottom because they have integrated handles to lift the printer.  The manual warns to not lift the printer by any other means than the handles.

The printer is now fully assembled.

Review:

The build was straightforward.  The toughest part was the wire management and hiding it.  A little frustration with the calibration, but that was corrupted firmware.  That can happen with any printer.

Comparison to other large printers:

I own a CR10S Pro, Anycubic Chiron, and Anycubic Predator.  I have seen a FLSUN Racer and V400.  I have also watched a ton of videos.  The XL is straightforward to use and simple to set up.  It is the quietest large printer I have ever used.  I would guess 1/4 to 1/2 the noise.

You are going to love this printer.  It is fantastic.  I think I am going to get another one.  I am going to wait at least 12 months, but I am going to replace my Chiron with one.

I find it very thoughtful of Prusa that you get XL bears with the XL. 😉

It's great to hear from a trusted voice lol.  Are you going to upgrade that one to 5 extruders?   I'm anxious to hear how you get on in the next few weeks.  I'm interested doing some tpu + soluble support prints with the xl.   I'm also anxious to use up this spool of aquasys 120 I bought ages ago that would never work with the mmu.

I also have wanted to do a full vader helm lol

Very envious of you right now !!!

There was a post about z-axis issues on reddit. There is a new bearing/z-axis holder, you can temporary fix it with washers.

Hi Chuck thank you for your build pictures

I started yesterday afternoon my build i have  XL 2 Head Semi assembled same as yours

i have the verry strong suspicion that the mounted the base head please 180 degrees wrong.

If i follow the https://help.prusa3d.com/guide/5-extruder-accessories-assembly_523539  the upper and lower only can be mounted reverse

it only works the smaller on top bigger in bottom.  So my question is is the manual wrong or did they mount the plate wrong.

as i have build, several Core Xy printers this is my suspicion. But before i disassemble the corexy mechanic i would like to see an close up picture to be sure thx thomas

about how long to assemble this?  Crazy how assembled it really is.

Took me 4 hours to put together my semi-assembled XL dual-toolhead and another 1 hour for the calibration. I wasn't rushing and made dinner halfway through so your mileage might vary.

The mounting for the toolhead holders caught me out. I tightened the bolts but apparently not enough because there was still some wobble in the holders. During calibration the toolhead fell off when trying to park. This isn't foolproof design. I'm proof of that.

Torx?, hex screws, 3mm allen on mine.

But that torque tool, that was some useless thing, do anyone know the torque spec?, I stripped one screw when it was like 5mm left for the indicator mark on the "tool", I want to use my own torque tool instead, but which nm?

Posted by: @cwbullet

Gathering the parts for the first step:  It is to install the uprights.  It used torx screws and had a 3d printed torx guage.
