Multi material couor model creation

I know I will probably get bombarded with look first then ask. I have looked but not finding a lot of details. Hence my request for help.

I got myself the XL 5 head unit and want to do some multi material and to do a bit of multi colour printing. Easy enough to do by layers (different colours) but I want to be able to create models I can paint with Prusa slicer and or use different materials. I have the basic idea but not very stable at it. I have seen some articles on petg and pla prints which I would love to try as well. Would someone please either direct me to the appropriate info or explain it to me (in simple terms?)
Some models I would like to print flat but have different colours.

Thanks

RE:

Simplest is to make one part for each material and export the parts as seperate files including their positional data.

Attached is a zip of three demo files. One is a simple block with receptacles for the other two.  The others only make sense if loaded as parts of the first when they will logically slot in place - if loaded as objects they fall to the print sheet as unconnected bits.

Import 3colourdemo1.stl and examine it - DON'T move it on the plate, right click on the part and 'Add Part' > 'Load' 3colourdemo2.stl, it will slip into the space left for it, repeat for 3colourdemo3.stl.  In the pane on the right select each part in turn and assign it to a different extruder - and slice.

Cheerio,

Thank you, I will give that a good look today. Starting to make more sense to me. Not quite as easy learning new procedures etc. as it was back then.

Hey,

Ive got a quick question: What software did you use to export the STL to already have the positional data stored and could you maybe explain how you did that? Or does PrusaSlicer just assume the position because it "fits" in there? I personally use Fusion360, and to my knowledge there is no positional data in the STL files if exported.

Thanks you in advance 🙂

If you save a set of STL's from a single model.
You should be able to load one of the bottom STL's as normal,
then right click on that part, in Prusa Slicer and choose   Add Part>From file
and the new part should  load in the relative place

Er, that one was OpenSCAD.

You can export stl files from Fusion 360 along with the relative positions of elements by right-clicking on the component (at the top of the tree), not on "body", if that's what you mean...

You can even do it in TinkerCad. Assemble it in Tinkercad and then export each part without moving them. Drop all the parts together in slicer and when it asks if they are part of the same object say yes. Then assign an extruder to each part.
