Great material combination: Essentium HTN and Amazon Basic PETG

I have a large part that I needed to print in nylon that also has lots of supports. I didn't want to print the supports in nylon as that would mar the surface and make a lot more work after printing. After a lot of trial and error, I found that Essentium HTN, a high temperature nylon would stick to Amazon Basic PETG when hot but when cold, it just pops right off.

Here's the part. It's automotive, is subject to a lot of heat and stress and ducts air into the radiator of an exotic car. The original is no longer available so 3D printing the part is a viable option. The part retails for about $300 a set (2). Nice markup.

Here's the part after popping it off the support structure. The structure came off easily from the sheet.

Essentium HTN is a high temperature nylon that can support up to 200C (~400F) which is higher than any temperature on a car outside the combustion flow path. This material machines nicely, sands easily and can be sanded with powered tools since the melting temperature is so high.

I had zero warpage with this print using a makeshift chamber from a cardboard box and some tape. That that gave me a great idea on how to make an enclosure with a minimum of parts, that would detach easily and completely seals the machine.

This box and tape method worked great. Ambient temperature inside the box was over 50C (130F). That apparently was sufficient to print this large part without any warpage at all.

I don’t just “like” this post, I “love” it! That’s the true beauty of the XL. It’s a true MMU.

When I first saw you mentioning nylon, I was hoping it was printable without doing some kind of enclosure hack. I really like how you used the cardboard however, and that makes it very cost-effective and approachable. Really just buying one large packing box from Lowe's for $2 or $3 would be plenty big for this.

Brand new to 3D printing and my 5-tool XL is my first 3D Printer! I have done massive amounts of research though, so I'm not starting completely from square one....
