UIs are complicated to develop, and difficult and time consuming to test. Most of the processing load is on the PC running the browser, though, so something like a better UI for handling files should be entirely feasible.
Samba would be way beyond the capabilities of the processor. Just running a secure HTTP server capable of handling PrusaLink is a major task for it. It's an embedded controller with 256 KB of RAM.

Well maybe not samba at such (since Prusa said they decided to not use any linux approach) but soomething of a similar manner that enables you to just see a shared folder and handle your files. If they cannot add this to Prusalink gui.
