Can the tool head change automatically when filament runs out on one head?
When the filament runs out on one head, is it possible to change automatically to another head?
We won't know for certain until someone tries it but the SpoolJoin function is standard on the MMU - all versions, so it's reasonable to expect it to be carried over.
Cheerio,
RE: Can the tool head change automatically when filament runs out on one head?
I was told by support that such a feature is planned for a future firmware upgrade.

No.

Yes, the spool join function is in the new alpha firmware 5.1

I’m really surprised they didn’t explicitly call this out in their blog when it’s clearly called spool join in the menus.
RE:
I think it is more or less mentioned under
Pre-print screen (XL Multi-Tool)
https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware-Buddy/releases
Seems you can map multiple extruders to one material...
RE: Can the tool head change automatically when filament runs out on one head?
I went ahead and installed the alpha fw as well as the matching ps preset. I don’t get that screen in the preprint view. I do get a similar screen that seems to let me remap which extruder to use, but that does not function correctly. So the answer to the OP for now is… no.

There's spool join in the new alpha FW

Ok… where? I looked in every menu. I don’t see it.
RE: Can the tool head change automatically when filament runs out on one head?
When you start a print and can change the colours/tool, click to change one to another tool/filament and it gives the option to spool join. I've not tried it yet.
RE: Can the tool head change automatically when filament runs out on one head?
Nope… when you select Change, it activates the material type and you can cycle through the different types. There’s no means there to couple spools. Nothing.
RE: Can the tool head change automatically when filament runs out on one head?
Don’t click on change, scroll on to one of the tools/colours and click, I think it gives the option then. I’ve a print going all day so I can take photos once that’s done if helpful
RE: Can the tool head change automatically when filament runs out on one head?
Yeah… I finally found the dang thing. It wasn’t easy.
select the print and you get the screen that shows the gcode filaments on the left and printer tools on the right. Rotate the knob past the buttons and the gcode filament on the left is selectable. Select it, then you can select a printer tool. Select a different printer tool and finally you’ll see a new screen with a spool join button on the bottom.
RE: Can the tool head change automatically when filament runs out on one head?
I’ll test it and report back.
RE: Can the tool head change automatically when filament runs out on one head?
It worked Perfectly!

I'm glad to hear that. I had installed an MMU on one of my two MK3s just for this function, so that I could use the reel backs. It would have been a real shame if the XL hadn't been able to do this.
