RE: 6.0.0-alpha Firmware for Original Prusa XL

Quick follow-up...  I did a 2-material print and it worked perfectly.  I'll try a 4 and 5 head print tonight.

Brand new to 3D printing and my 5-tool XL is my first 3D Printer!Check out my Multi-Tool fork of PrusaSlicer to mix and match nozzle sizes.

Spoke too soon - did a test print with 2 colors and ironing and had a MASSIVE layer shift on the top solid layer pre-ironing.  Offset by roughly 10mm on a 45 degree diagonal.

RE: 6.0.0-alpha Firmware for Original Prusa XL

New firmware is a slam dunk if the noise is a big issue for ya, but I feel like there were other secret changes in the sauce too at least in the way the machine treats belt tension. I did not do a full calibration run after the new firmware install, but in hindsight I probably should have since I ran into a few issues:

  • Starting a phase stepping calibration seems to skip the entire 'home first' step and the selector would crash into the docking pins.
  • I had a weird issue where Tool1 had a stretch/shift in the Yaxis, but not X, and no other tools exhibited this error.
  • Had one instance of ToolChangeError on Tool5, which I've only ever had occur in one specific 2.7.2-alpha2 slice.
  • For the first time since I've had my XL, I had two layer shifts and in a single print.

So, I rechecked all my docks and found Tool1 a little loose, probably from the crash. I did belt tension stuff with the tuning website from a phone. It was so hard to get a consistent result from just doing the steps in the youtube video, so I wasn't sure if I was even doing it correctly. Eventually landed on throwing in a couple passes switching from T1 to T5 just to move the belt around a bit before rechecking/redoing the twanging procedure; repeated that for like an hour until I got consistent results in the green. Then ran through the full calibration suite. All just to turn off phase stepping anyway because the noise doesn't bother me much and I'd rather have crash detection lol

Option to turn off the LED brightness auto-changing 👍

But no option to have it at full bright or dimmed 🙃

Same thing here. It tapped it from the top, but lowered the bed too much to tap from the side.

After install somehow lost all my tool head offsets. Went to do the calibration and after detecting the pin the first time, the head moved away, moved toward the pin and stopped. Got the red screen of death stating that the tool head could not reach the pin. Had to do a hard reset, reflash 5.2 and do a complete recalibration from scratch.

Yup, got this exact thing too.

I got the XL this week and was negatively surprised by the volume. Today I installed the new alpha firmware. This seems to solve the problem. I uploaded a comparison video:

For today i am very happy 🙂

PETG was loaded in tool 1 and I wanted to replace it with PLA. Saw that PLA was already loaded. I canceled the unload filament process. Then there was a message like the one in the picture below.

The printer then ran error-free again.

RE:

Never used PrusaConnect to update a printer before. I downloaded the new firmware, dragged it to the upload section in my browser. It reported that it uploaded, but the install process seemed to have stalled at 50% for at least 10 minutes (could be off on that). Nothing happened that I could see, so I pressed the reset button. The machine booted normally without running the update.

I removed the USB stick and attempted to add the update to it, but the drive appeared to be corrupted. I reformatted it, and added the new firmware. Put the USB stick back in to the printer, rebooted again, and updated. Everything now appears to be working. Went through the calibration and reduced motor noise by ~ 98%!

Should I have “waited longer” at the “Waiting” prompt shown in PrusaConnect? Was there something else, an instruction perhaps, I missed? Thanks!

Good update, glad the printer is quieter now. Is phase stepping not enabled in tool changes? It sounds like it is not.

Tool offset calibration fails with this firmware had to revert to 5.1.2

RE:

I didn't know that after the update you gain 1 cm on the X axis! I am now able to print 37 x 36 x 36 cm!

I had a crash followed by a layer shift, which I didn't babysit. When I found the finished print, there was another crash message at 99%. that is the result.

I don't know if it's something firmware specific, maybe the first crash was to blame, but I don't really know why. I guess the first purge got caught on the hotend over time.

Do you have Phase Stepping turned off?

I've logged my experience with the new firmware and Phase Stepping off on Github. Basically I've been getting belt-tension-like symptoms (skewed prints, layer shifts) with the new firmware when Phase Stepping is turned off; simply turning Phase Stepping back on 'fixes' those issues.

Identical experience for me. I thought i'm doing something wrong.

Late to the party, but one thing I found is to use the homing tower here and tuning the belt as it goes.

https://www.printables.com/model/542670-homing-tower

The tension the phone app said was good turned out to be WAY too low and the print results were crap.  Tightening a quarter turn at a time with the tower got me to the point of having a perfectly smooth tower section.  Note that I did this prior to the latest 6.0 FW, but the belt tension should be the same I would think, since that's a hardware thing.

Good update, glad the printer is quieter now. Is phase stepping not enabled in tool changes? It sounds like it is not.

All of the fast moves are the same noise level.  Either phase stepping calibrations don't apply to full-speed moves, or they have excluded them for some reason.  Another example is fast solid infill when it is doing a large section of flat layer infill.  In that case, the noise level is unchanged.

RE: 6.0.0-alpha Firmware for Original Prusa XL

Since ol' J.P. himself said that they were working on "stealth mode", maybe the travel moves and such will be part of that.  Maybe it will slow some of those moves down such that there might be more of a disadvantage to having it on at all times.  For things like that, that can't affect print quality (tool change moves), it would be "fun" to be able to enable stealth mode on a schedule e.g. between 10 PM and 7 AM 😀

In order to find out the maximum speed for quiet operation, I ran a small test program which I would like to share with you again. Unfortunately, the limit seems to be reached at 160mm/s for diagonal movements. I would say that's a bit low for rapid travel.

This is exactly what the printer needs!!
