XL dual tool - print fan self test fails on both extruders

I just finished assembling my new XL dual tool and all tests pass except the print fan RPM speed test on both tools:

Both fans on both tools are spinning correctly during the self test but still I'm getting this error. I've also turned on the print fan manually in the temperature menu (setting it to 100%) and then checking the sensor information page, which shows the fan speed to be at 100% (and I can see the fan actually spinning). I've unplugged both tool wiring plugs and plugged them back in, but that didn't make any difference. Printing works fine if I confirm at the start of the print that not all tests were completed. During printing, I can clearly see the print fan spinning up from the 2nd layer and up.

I emailed support about this but didn't hear back (yet).

This is happening on my 5-toolhead XL, did you figure it out?

The prints are turning out fine.

I was chatting with support for a long time about this issue and in the end they admitted that they're seeing similar issues on a lot of their own printers. It's most likely a software issue: the self-test is too picky about fan RPMs. For example, the fan may spin at 8200 rpm but the software is expecting 8250 rpm. It will probably be fixed in a future firmware update.

In case you or anyone else might still be having issues with the fan test error I might have one possible solution. Through my talks with their support team they suggested removing the print fan shroud during the testing. This is the 3d printed part underneath the print fan with two screws attaching it to the tool head. When i tried this and removed the print fan shroud it seems to pass with no issue.

You have to be kidding me???  Just got done putting my 5semi together and it won’t pass the fan test either.  The results seem to be random.  Sometimes all five hot ends pass and all the print fans fail.  Then a checkerboard of pass fail.  And the ‘fan switch’ is hit or miss.  How did they pass outbound QA???

This is what I tried and got them to pass. Print fans all had to be ductless.  One main fan needed to be unscrewed to pass.  I just don’t like it.  It seems like such a kludge.  Maybe there is nothing to ‘cheating’ but what if the fan is really binding?  It doesn’t look like it.

"I had the same problem with my XL 5 heads, (same message and randomly). I disassembled the print fan fairing on all the tools and removed the burrs and angel hair, then put them back together. The test then passes without any issues. Everything works today. I hope this can help other people."

I'm in the 'its probably just a small software/firmware bug' camp. It took me 3 or 4 attempts to have the fan test to pass on my 5T and each time was a different result. Didn't even do anything to attempt a fix since I could see things spinning and didn't hear any abnormalities, just reran the test until it passed.

What I’m kind of livid about is that I contacted the chat about the problem. They refused to do anything until I sent them a video of the problem. The only thing is that their chat thing doesn’t take files over 10 MB,. So they said just to put it someplace like Google Drive and they would look at it. I do 3-D printing, I don’t do other crap. I ask them if they believe me or not. But they refused to help me unless I sent a video then I got rather rude with them told them, said  I’ll just go to Reddit and fix my $3500 printer.

they have to be having this problem with their assembled printers, and when they test print heads.  I feel like they are using us to collect data and someone in their organization has put down the gauntlet that either you send pics and videos or you don’t get help.  My problem was is that once I tried to send the too big of a video file, it wouldn’t even send small pictures.

extremely disappointing with Prusa on how they’re handling this problem.

The fan test is very sensitive, the slightest obstacle is enough to make this test fail. If it does not pass, the best thing to do is to remove the lower fairings and redo the test. If everything is okay, then it's essential to remove any burrs and other angel hairs, then replace the fairings and redo the test. Normally it should be fine after that. If not, there's something else obstructing these fans, and in that case, PRUSA support really needs to intervene. At my place, ever since I cleaned these parts, the test passes every time without error.

There is no way that these heads are passing QA…

JUST booted up my 5 extruder fully(laugh)-assembled xl.   getting the checkerboard of pass fail.  All fans are spinning up.  I'll do as others are suggesting and run it a few times.  so silly.

As a few people have suggested, removing the fan shrouds before running the test will fix it. That's what I did and it passed on the first try.

never did get them all to pass, they all passed at various iterations so I just did the rest of the calibration and moved on.  Doing first bench now.

Flashing the newest firmware 4.7.2 did the trick for me (or maybe it was extreme luck on the slot machine as I tried it about 15 times, switched FW and it worked).

I started to wonder if it was the altitude affecting fan speed.....

Glad you got yours too.  Getting mine up and running was a two week affair- half PRusa/half me.  The drolling/goober issue is my next challenge for 5 color PLA prints.  After that, multi chemistry PETG/Nylon/PC/Flex combinations.

Mine came flashed with 4.7.2,   but it might be worth a shot to reflash I supposed.

My benchy was looking great until it detached from the plate lol.  This is why I almost never use the satin sheet for PLA on my MK4s, certainly not for things with small build plate contact like benchy.  I need to see about getting a smooth xl sheet for pla prints.

RE: XL dual tool - print fan self test fails on both extruders

yeah, I think they are trying to get to fancy monitoring all fans at once.  I feel like they should do one extruder at a time, one fan at a time.   Kind of crazy they didn't get that resolved before sending these things to customers.

I'm going to try some multi color next definitely.   Like you, my real interest is doing things like TPU + soluble, etc.   I definitely know I'm going to have to loosen the idler on the extruders to get tpu to load.  just pushing pla through that length of PTFE tube and into the extruder I noticed it required a good push to get it past the filament sensor.  I have them pretty loose on the MK4s.  part of the experimentation over the next few weeks I'm sure lol.   I need to see about the enclosure too so I can try some ABS/ASA.

I'm also eyeing being able to use this spool of aquasys 120 that I could never get to work in the MMU.
