Under extrusion on first third layers on multi color print

Hey guys,
I have since last week my semi assembled Prusa XL (5 Tool Head).

Building and test had no issues!

First prints (single color) in PLA+ was clean and fine.
Printed also a temp tower for the best setting (eSUN PLA+ 210C°).

But if I print multi color, I get a under extrusion for the 2-3 layer of the non base colors.

  • tested multi colors/filaments
  • tested to dry the filament
  • tested different models
  • tested different z heights
  • tested 0.1mm and 0.15mm

On the 4 layer everything is fine, I only happend on the first 3 layer

orange: first layer
orange: 1 layer

orange: 2 layer
yellow: 1 layer
purple: 1 layer
orange: 2 layer | yellow: 1 layer | purple: 1 layer
orange: 3 layer
yellow: 2 layer
purple: 2 layer
orange: 3 layer | yellow: 2 layer | purple: 2 layer
orange: 2 layer
orange: 2 layer

Has one, any idea what can be the issue?

Settings:

  • 215C° (first layer)
  • 210C°
  • 60C° (bed)
  • 0.1mm or 0.15mm
  • 04.mm nozzle
  • input shaping
  •

Hey I fixed the issue!

I rerun the tool calibration, this fixed the issue.
On the first calibration I used the textured and not the satin sheet.

Try the satin sheet first. I have first layer problems with the textured sheet and PLA (it helps in my case to slice with -0.05mm Z offset).
IS is hit or miss for me. It works fine with Prusament PLA and any PETG, but not with my other brand PLAs (results look similar to yours, but the same problems happen with single color). Try the non-IS Quality profile (or replace that color with the filament that came with the printer to test).
Next I would repeat the offset calibration with really clean nozzles. Orange looks too high, black too low.
If that doesn't help I would check if all nozzle screws are engaged properly, assuming you have already tested all tools with single color and got good quality.

Your are sure that it be can the sheet?
All 5 heads print perfect on the first layer on the sheet and also tested all colors.
So the first layer on the sheet is any time good.

It is only happend after tool changing and if its print on a other color.

I already checked all nozzles if they are clean.

None IS I not tested yet (will do it after my actual test print)

Yes, it can be the sheet. But yesterday I had exactly the same issue as you, the 3rd layer completely messed up when no 1&2 were absolutely perfect. Turns out it was too much drag in the filament path of one extruder. Because that didn't build the wipe tower properly, the other extruders filament also detached and dragged gunk over the print. It took quite a while for the problem to appear, the filament was really stretched in the end. I let it run for a while to see what happens, and eventually the extruder built up enough force to overcome the resistance and continued printing just like in your case.
I had installed a new filament dryer (Sunlu S2) and had fed the filament out of that box, which has a really terrible internal filament path. As soon as I put the spool back in it's normal place it worked again. This happens because the first layer prints slower, so it's not as sensitive to drag. You could check for kinks or debris in your PTFE tubes, or it could be out of spec filament. Or a partially clogged nozzle, or wrong idler gear tension. The usual stuff.

Awesome! I do all calibrations and tests with the satin sheet as well. Textured is finicky sometimes.
