RE: Stringing Issues

it might be obvious, but I think you should mention the latest firmware also.

RE: Stringing Issues

You are absolutely correct! It is always a good idea to update that.

Ha - as I got the printer recently, it either came already with it - or - it was the first thing I did. Since then there was nothing new.

RE: Stringing Issues

Re Nozzle wipers: After some time of testing I came now to the conclusion that the silicone wipers are less efficient than the brass brushes.

The reason: I have seen now that if the nozzle is wiping off something on the silicone wipers, it might be picked up on the next go. With the brass brushes the material usually gets brushed off and lands in the bin below - OR it stucks in the brush (from which you can easily remove it again, but it usually does not get picked up from there on entering or leaving the bay.

I am interested to see what others have found out here!

For now I will remove the silicone wipers and replace them accordingly.

I am adding this here in the hope that this helps someone - lot's of tips which I have found and which I used to make it work for me.

So for the stringing and dripping - I had now many more extensive tests and complicated models and I am now in a good state with no stringing and most other problems gone.

  1. The filament really needs to be dry. In my case I have to print from the dryer (as I live in a place with high humidity)
  2. Use the new slicer 2.7.2
  3. Nozzle wipers (for testing I have installed on one nozzle a brass brush and on the other 4 the silicone wipers. I can still not decide which one is better. I thought that the brass wiper would collect more "dirt" but that didn't really happen)
  4. Check the belt tension (the phone tool is ... unfortunately more luck and fiddling than I wanted though - if anyone has something more reliable: Let me know! Maybe this works here too?)
  5. It of course is depending on the filament...
  • TerraPoly PLA matte 215C / Bed 50C
  • MatterHackers Build 212C / Bed 50C + special "dog video" G-code (G1 Y360 E-1 F24000)

Plus - optionally (?)

  • As I added my exhaust cover - it might have an impact on the overall temperature, etc.. No guarantee, but I have definitely seen changes in behavior depending on using the fan in there, etc.

Which silicone wiper did you use?

RE: Stringing Issues

The ones from the company "which shall not be named". (See this printable).

If you have a different variation: Let me know as I bought 5 of these wipers (and have them all done)

I will be using these printable trash cans + these scrubbers instead.

The one from bambulabs? Yeah I have these on right now, but haven’t tested extensively to notice any issues with it yet

RE: Stringing Issues

I don't have problems with them either, but the brushes seem to simply work better. 🙂

RE: Stringing Issues

What about nozzle abrasion? I fear continuous friction overtime will cause the nozzle to wear and tear faster

RE: Stringing Issues

I have/had the same concern. That was the reason why I used 1 brush and 4 silicone wipers myself. However it appears that most people in the threads seem not to see that as a problem. My observation was that I have seen that the silicone wipers were brushing the stuff off - but it does not always fall down. Instead it appeared that sometimes the debris was picked up on the way back - whereas the brush is more localized and either the debris stays in the brush or falls down.

But.. I will see that I can have a look at the nozzles in comparison to see if something can be seen. Will update once I have seen how it looks.

RE:

Hi guys,

in regards to the tension belt: Forget about the phone. You need to adjust the tension with a Trummeter like this one:

https://www.amazon.de/dp/B00V5B181S?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

My tension is exactly 80hz on both sides.

One more point to mention here: Did you perform the printer calibration again after you have setup the tension of the belts correctly? 😉

I bet that 98% of the users just adjust the belts and dont run the calibration again. Or do you expect everything to work fine with the pre-belt adjustment numbers?

In regards to the stringing problems with PLA and PETG. Everyone lives in a different area of the world. What works for others, must not work for you. You need to test your temps on your own.

I for example live in Europe/Germany and never try my PETG or PLA filaments (I dont print anything else). I run my PETG at 220 first layer and 220 other layers with a bed temp of 70 dregrees celcius. If I use higher temps than 220 for PETG, I directly get stringing all of the print. Hence 220 degrees celcius seems to be a good value for my location in germany.

Beside of that: The problems PRUSA users experience with the XL are not acceptable. The XL is faulty from my point of view and you cant expect users to test and experiment for weeks or months to get clean results.

Cheers

PJ
