Filament stopped feeding during first long print

Model: Assembled XL Multitool with two Nextruders; Firmware: 4.7.2

Nextruder 1: PLA Pearl Mouse that came with the printer

Nextruder 2: PLA Pearl Blue that I had bought some time ago but had opened from the sealed package a few days ago.

I had successfully printed the XL First Layer Test and the Two-Color Prusa Keychain XL and those prints worked fine.  Yesterday I started the XL Rocket Engine (two color) test model printing and it did great for the first several hours, but when I checked on it last night it had stopped printing and was asking me to insert filament until the filament sensor detected it.  Here's a picture of how it looked at that point:

You can see that it had a filament, or some kind of issue a little earlier in the print that caused a gap in the nozzle but that it developed a more serious version of that same issue, as far as I can tell, which caused it to stop extruding filament all together.

I pulled the filament out and pushed it back in until I heard the beep saying the filament senser detected it and starting it running again.  What I saw was it trying to print around 3/8 - 1/2 high above the currently completed portion of the model.  You can see this here:

I'm wondering if something caused the filament to stop feeding.  I don't have a picture of the filament coming off the spool but I had the spool holder slid out a bit so perhaps the spool shifted some and caused too high a tension on the filament?  Has anyone else seen this?  Or any thoughts on what to check?

Dave

I'd appreciate any answers/suggestions anyone has for this issue I've had.

Your filiment didn't get stuck in a loop on the spool did it? Maybe a defect in the filiment?

No, it didn't seem to be stuck at all.  When I found it had stopped, it was asking me to feed filament into the extruder so I did that and didn't have any issue with the filament drawing off the spool.  I pulled the filament back out just a bit and then fed it in and then I heard the beep saying that the filament sensor had detected it.

At that point, I restarted the printing but, as I said, it was printing in the air about a 1/2 inch above the top of the uncompleted model so it had obviously been running for quite a while thinking it was successfully printing but without actually depositing any filament on the model.

I might try a simplier but still tall model to see if it happens when it gets to a particular height or something like that.

Thanks,

Dave

Hope it works out. It looks like you were getting a good print. I have been printing some pretty tall and narrow parts for my enclosure and no issues so far. 🤞 🤞
