Hey, everyone that is considering or have an full enclosure. A word of caution for you. I have been thoroughly testing my enclosure the past few weeks and while testing this week have run into a small issue I thought I would share.                                    

      I have raised the stakes a little this week by printing ASA at higher Enclosure temperatures. I started the week by starting with a preheat up to 40C. Then the plan was to raise the temp to 52C-54C to test the enclosure. The good news is the enclosure worked flawlessly. The bad news is you will start to get filament binding starting at 47C-48C with the stock Looooong PTFE tubes. It seems that because of the large printing platform and how far the Nextruders have to stretch, in high temps this changes the shape of the PTFE tubes just enough for the filament to bind. When this happens the feed gear struggles to pull the filament through the tubing and the print will fail. The printer will continue to print without the extruding filament.

          I tried four prints with both Nextruders and had the same results. As soon as I exceeded that magic temp of 46C-47C the prints began to fail due to binding.

    Key spots the PTFE is deforming are around the wire ties behind the docking station, where the PTFE enters the Nextruder, and the holding clips.

         It doesn't take much for the filament to bind when the temps are high and you have long runs of PTFE.

         So what is the cure. I will try a few things next week.

1. Larger 3mm ID PTFE tube.

2. A poster recommended  the Capricorn low friction PTFE tubing which I will try.

For now I am printing the higher temp filaments at 44C-46C until I figure out the PTFE issue.

I guess Prusa will face the same issue with their enclosure, so I wonder how they will solve it. Regarding the relevant printed parts of the XL, I note that cable-clip-click.stl was updated 31 August 2023 according to https://www.printables.com/model/449554-xl-printable-parts/files, but there's no archive of older revisions (and no github yet) so I can't tell what changed. There's also two versions of dock-cable-router.stl, although the PTFE path looks unchanged - but as you say, the pinch point here was with the zip ties.

There's also the small black clip as seen here:

- but I can't find the STL for that. I've requested it. Where exactly did you notice friction "where the PTFE enters the Nextruder" - was it literally at the festo connector?

Unless I'm mistaken, Capricorn is not available in transparent (it tends to be blue-ish) which is unfortunate as I find it useful to be able to see what's going on inside long tubes. It's also fiercely expensive!

I'm building my 5T this weekend, and have ordered Voxel3D's enclosure kit from AliExpress.

Yes that is right it developed a small pinch right where it enters the festo connector. I have the new Capricorn and the regular 3mm id PTFE sitting on my desk. I am going to change Nextruder 1 next week and raise the temp up again to see what happens.

bonus points to michael at 3dupfitters.   I identified the fact that the bolt in one of the corner pieces on the E1 side actually interferes with E1 docking/undocking.   In my case I've taken out the bolt and it works fine.  I emailed and I've been working with him so he can redesign the part and the matching hole going forward so others won't run into that.  Super good customer service.

I wanted to follow up with this.  I had made mod to the mod 3dupfitters supplied for spool holder base that would press the acrylic to the frame.   I have now followed this up with one that would do that but also allow 608 bearings.  So if you if you are looking for a spool holder that will fit the 3dupfitters enclosure and will allow you to use 608 bearings.  Feel free to check out this thing I came up with.  I'm printing a full set now that I know they work.

stevQ, I am just finishing the bench for a more permanent location for my XL and looking at options for an enclosure. 

Looking to build the Cabby design.

For panels I can duplicate the shapes and send out for cutting and manually drill during assembly, any chance you will release the panels as step files?

I jus finished my fully enclosed XL and I am seeing the same issue. My enclosure temp is stable at 40c  and about 2 hr into the print is noticed that it had stop extruding and the printer continues to print.  After inspection I notice the same gear marks in the filament, my first thought was Heat Creep,  I am using ASA with fan off, bed temp at 105c and nozzle at 250c.
If you don't mind could you share your slicer setup file and I will try to repeat exactly.

Looking for a little help printing ASA I have no problem printing it in ABS,  This is a picture of the fail parts, also how can I add my PrusaSlicer file to this post 

 

 At this temperature 92 F in the enclosure the filament stops wanting to feed, I dont undstand this since I have no issues printing ABS and the enclosure temperature is between 103 f to 106 f  while printing the ABS.

Update:

After further  review I decided to raise my nozzle temperature to 260°c thinking that 250°c was not hot enough, causing high enough effort to slip the drive wheels.  This has solved my problem I have now been printing for over 2 hr with no issues.

Your poll is missing a line for "Compact size". Ideally something similar to the Prusa XL Sumo Enclosure at 3dsourcerer.com. But with Prusa touches... Maybe managing to get the filament rolls into some sort of humidity controlled side panel or top section.

Im thinking to use trotten ( ?f=s) , as mentioned before. Put a MDF bottom in the bottom of the table (20-ish cm above ground), put plexi (acrylic) glass around; fixate the "glass" with powerful magnets to the metal frame and then either just put a plexi-lid on top or if needed (since it would be approximate 80cm high and 90cm seems to be a recommendation) add something with more clearance.

One thing to consider with the XL is that a lot of mass is being slung around fast and that imparts some decent force into whatever the XL is sitting on. You'll want that table to be heavy, extremely stiff, and have a secure grip on the floor, preferably, a vibration barrier.

I have a 250lb table, very sturdy, and it still shakes the table way too much.

I think enclosing the entire machine in a box is going to cause heat issues with the electronics. I think the ideal enclosure would enclose nothing but the parts required and leave all the electronics on the outside of the heated space.

Best MODEL already build one - works perfect and ist super stable - costs about 300-400 Euro
