Have you tried a different USB cable? I’m getting the timeout issue as well, but it didn’t start until I flashed the newer alpha firmware. I was fine on 4.7.1.

Yep. Multiple cables, including ones that work to my mk4’s, multiple pi’s and fresh installs of OS. Think I’ve exhausted the troubleshooting I can do. Was going to wait for new firmware from Prusa that has the octoprint fixes and see if that helps.

They just released 5.10 Beta which has Alpha Octoprint support, give this firmware a shot and see if that helps!

That seems to have done the trick. Will work until they get the bugs ironed out.

RE: Prusa XL & Octoprint

Is there a way to get the XL's printing status with Octoprint? It is able to read all the temperatures of my 2 tool machine, but the status stays on "Operational" when idle, printing, or finished. I had alerts setup through home assistant on my MK3S and some smart plug logic with Octoprint plugins that I'd like to get setup. I don't mind uploading to the USB card and printing from that. Just want to use Octoprint for monitoring at this point. Thanks for any help

Heads up, it looks like if you print from the USB on the XL and use the filament remap, then after that print is finished try and print from Octoprint again, you're going to get tool head errors and in my case the print would run without ever actually picking up the tool head. Would be great if the folks at Prusa would spend some more time getting us better Octoprint support, the ability to do the filament remap from Octoprint would be awesome.

RE: Prusa XL & Octoprint

Wanting to upgrade from my i3 mk3s+ I have the mk4 in my shopping card for almost a year now, even though it is quite expensive compared to other brands. I am also considering to buy an XL instead, since I don't spend much money elsewhere. However losing (full) octoprint (compatibility) and being dependend on some proprietary solution is keeping me from actually ordering what's in my cart.

I don't see any real reason why the new models can't be shipped with Prusa's cloud AND octoprint compatibility other than trying force cloud services upon customers. Given the history of Prusa I am pretty sure that a lot of 'old' customers disagree with this new approach and potential new customers compare almost the same cloud based walled garden printing Bambu offers but with a much higher price tag for objectively worse printers than Bambu's (XL aside).

I really hope that the mk4 gets an updated version with octoprint capabilities in the near future.

RE: Prusa XL & Octoprint

I've been using my 2T XL for about 6 months now, and I'm finding that I don't miss Octoprint all that much.  I still use it for my MK3S but I get almost all the functionality I am used to with Octoprint and a some new functionality by using PrusaLink and PrusaConnect, but with a loss of some "elegance".  The thing I miss the most with PrusaLink/PrusaConnect is the live camera, so I have a Pi with Octoprint and a camera mounted on the printer just so I have that back. I have an old phone mounted on the printer as well so I can see periodic snapshots when I'm away from home.  While not as good as "live" it gives enough information to know if I should abort a print.  I also don't like the slowness of the gcode/bgcode downloads with PrusaLink but there is seldom a time when it takes longer to download a file than it takes me to go from upstairs (computer) to the basement (printer).  I don't use the download capability via PrusaConnect because it just becomes a two step process and I don't want to store files on Prusa's cloud. The new "streaming" function where the print can start while the file transfer is still underway has little appeal to me so I haven't tried it.

I like the statistics that are available via the LCD that I will lose if I go to Octoprint.  I wish I could see all the information via PrusaLink or PrusaConnect that I can see on different screens on the LCD.  In all honesty, I really only use PrusaLink to download files since I can get much more information via PrusaConnect.  Unfortunately, I can't see much more via PrusaConnect but what I can see is usually useful.

I wish the Control section of PrusaConnect was more robust.  It can be quicker to do some things there than with the LCD using the slower computer I have near the printers.  I also wish I could see the status of all the tools instead of just the one in the holder.  I'm hopeful that Prusa will continue to develop and improve both PrusaLink (still BETA?) and PrusaConnect.

I wish that Octoprint could be more like PrusaConnect, allowing monitoring, communication, and some control while letting the printer's processor do the work instead of taking over from the printer's processor.

RE: Prusa XL & Octoprint

I was afraid to have just the experience you are having. I don't NEED Octoprint and there are workarounds to get features like camera back. The price for mk4 or XL however is way too high to accept workarounds from the start, depending on a manufacturers cloud services for many features. Afail PrusaLink is still beta, yes, but that makes it even worse, as the customer intentionally is left with the choice between fiddling around with SD cards like a caveman or using an unfinished cloud product. I am pretty sure that Prusa could have taken these features you like about PrusaConnect and serve them as Octoprint plugins, but I think that they will leave that open source path more and more as competitors use it as a basis for their proprietary products, gaining and advantage.

RE: Prusa XL & Octoprint

I guess Octoprint is working OK with the single tool but not yet with the multi-tool.  Having away from home access via Prusa Connect is a welcome feature over Octoprint, limited though it is.  I expect that even with Octoprint is functioning with the multi tool printer I'll probably stay with Link/Connect.  All in what you get used to, I guess.

Thats not exactly true. Prusa has some small things to work on, but I use my 5TH everyday with Octoprint.

@spyryt-2 I have OctoPrint working on my 5TH, but only for single tool head prints.

Have you got it working with multiple tool heads in one print?

If so, how did you achieve it working properly?

Thank,

Ben.

@ipind-3d It’s been a bit since I did this, but at this point, you shouldn’t have to do much. Just make sure you’re using the most up to date firmware and newest prusaslicer. Also, make sure in Octoprint you have it configured so that it knows you have 5TH. Can’t remember the window that’s in, but it’s pretty easy to find.

Thanks for coming back to me.

I'm on FW 6.0.1, PS 2.7.4 and OctoPrint 1.10.1, which are all the latest and have the printer set as 5TH in OctoPrint.

I sending the sliced prints in Gcode, not BGcode.

I'm not sure what I'm missing?

Hello, I have just started my first successful print with 3 colors. Your settings are the same as mine, except that I use the BGCode addon from jneillii. Maybe that will solve your problem?

RE: Prusa XL & Octoprint

Quick update.

It's now working. The only thing I can think that is possibly different from the other day is that I had the RPi running before I powered the printer on.

It shouldn't make a difference, but it seems like it may have?  🤔   Go figure?!

I've tried BGCode and GCode and both work, so no need for the BGCode plugin.

Happy days!
