RE: Prusa XL & Octoprint

Hello, did you proceed with the solution of the situation? It won't let me continue printing. Coufi

RE: Prusa XL & Octoprint

I'm really disappointed with my prusa XL

No octoprint for a start. that is a downer.

The stupid thing homes to the left back corner of the build plate, so you can't get at the nozzle if you want to check it.

It is noisy and vibrates a lot when printing.

It's far too expensive for what it is.

In the sensor info page it shows 33v on the 5v rail when in fact it's working properly.

Buying an XL was an expensive stuff up on my part. It's like a 4 years old printer that hasn't been updated.

Tsk. My bad

Chris

RE: Prusa XL & Octoprint

This is very different than my experience.

Octoprint works great on my XL. Just hook up a USB cable and everything worked. There's an error about thermal runway, but you can just dismiss it. The temperature on the nozzle is also incorrect, but those things will get fixed in time. It's a brand new machine.

Mine also homes to the front left of the build plate and it's easy to swap nozzle from there, although I usually jog it more to the center.

RE: Prusa XL & Octoprint

Many thanks for replying to my post.

That's very helpful. I couldn't find much about the XL and octoprint, but I will do as you suggest.

I've no idea why mine parks right at the back... I can move the print head around ok from the XLCD, and gcode is interpreted correctly.

Thanks

Chris.

RE: Prusa XL & Octoprint

I've got mine connected to Octoprint, there are settings in there for number of tool heads that I missed the first time I tried. So now it is reporting the proper temperatures for tools/bed.

On this second try, I didn't get a warning about thermal runaway.

I have to disagree about the tool access.. no matter where it homes, you can just move the two slide locks to the left and pull the whole tool from the carriage to check it out.. then just put it back and slide the locks to the right.  The one in back just slides off to the left and goes back on the the right, just line up the pegs.

My problem this time is that Octoprint is getting too many timeouts for it to print.  I tried the Prusalink and found it to be really, really basic. No camera, no terminal, no messages that might hint at the problem. I won't use PrusaConnect, I don't feel I should have to share everything with the internet just to print something.

So far I haven't had any successful prints.

I just got my XL setup and calibrated last night. I sent the first print via PrusaLink, and it works well enough, but as others have noted, the upload performance is rather dismal. I'll be watching the OctoPrint forums to see what develops there. I might be the first person to ask about it, as I saw no conversation about the XL.

RE: Prusa XL & Octoprint

You should probably be more specific what you're looking for in terms of compatibility. Octoprint works fine for the xl right now in most cases. All I'm aware of is an issue where octoprint doesn't recognize the thermal protection circuit and doesn't correctly recognize the current hotend temperature.

It may have other issues with multi head printers I'm not aware of, but it works generally very well, even with most plugins I've tried.

I guess full compatibility as with the Mk3 experience was the underlying goal. I'll see if I can clarify a bit though.

Totally understand the goal you're after and appreciate you carrying the torch over in those forms.

As a software engineer, I can tell you the first question the OP team will have:  "what specifically isn't working?"

The more specific details you can give them, prioritized by the most important things first, the more likely they are to be able to fix them.

I've preordered an RPi 5 and intend to use that as the OctoPrint host for the XL. Since I absolutely can't get hold of the RPi 4. So I'll be able to pinpoint any weirdness better. Possibly, my question was a bit premature.

Looks like lots of Pi4s available. I think a 5 would be hugely overkill...

I always forget about that resource; thank you for reminding me.

As far as overkill goes, I prefer to think of it as future-proofing. 🙃

Good way to look at it.

RE: Prusa XL & Octoprint

Seems like the new Alpha Firmware broke Octoprint support completely. After changing the output back to Gcode instead of bgcode, I uploaded the file to my pi, and when I hit print, it just sits there at "Starting".

Hmmm... that would make sense. As this is new and in Alpha, I imagine the OctoPrint crew will need time to adopt those changes. I'm not at all sure what prior communication they have with Prusa.

I'm grateful Prusa is making this an open format. When I first saw that they were moving towards binary to reduce the file size, I had visions of vendor lock-in.

RE: Prusa XL & Octoprint

Nope, its the other way around. Octoprint has taken no action to make it compatible with the buddyboard. It's on Prusa to provide this support, as they've admitted. (Except for the case of bgcode, hopefully they pick that up).

RE: Prusa XL & Octoprint

Curious if you have a single toolhead or multihead XL? Connecting Octoprint to my XL was easy enough. I can control temp on bed and all toolheads. When I send a print my bed begins heating up but the toolhead does nothing. Then it crashes with a "Serial" error and says the printer is either disconnected or multiple things are trying to connect on the port.

Made sure wifi was turned off and disabled PrusaConnect and still receive the error. Haven't been able to find a solution.
