SL1 re-Calibration .. wash - ruse - dry -repeat

I am having to re-calibrate my SL1 every three or four prints. This is happening just recently so something  is not right. I re-calibrate .. every thing works great .. then three or four prints later I have to do it over again. Suggestions?

What is happening to cause you to re-do the calibration?

My print is hanging off of the build plate. The part hanging down looks like a melted candle. When this happened the first time I noticed this was only on one side as if the resin wasn't being cured there. I calibrated and get a perfect print. Two or three prints or so and .. same things happens. Print fails .. half of the plate is on the resin tray bottom. I calibrate and every thing is fine. My guess is that the calibration data is not being written to the ROM? Seems reasonable as with the machine on and calibrated it prints fine.

How hard are you cranking down on the bolts holding the platform's gimbal in place? Some of us have found that you really have to crank those bolts pretty hard or the can end up letting the platform slip position. Similarly if the bolt holding the platform in place isn't being tightened it can cause what you describe.

After I got my SL1 back from Prusa and they has given it a clean bill of health I found that my prints kept failing as you describe. What would print would have a slant for the first few mm of the platform. Like you I re-calibrated and cranked everything as tight as I could make it, but I kept having issues. I finally gave up and ran through the calibration one more time with the following changes:

  • First I used levels to make sure the printer was level.
  • Rather than using the tank to level the LCD, I used a small level.
  • I did not tighten the gimbal when told to.
  • After it raises the platform to the top of the Z axis I then used my level to level the platform.

My prints started coming out perfect. At 161 hours my LCD had a complete failure (not UV exposure) even though there was no sign of external damage (you could see internal damage, but neither glass was damaged). After replacing the LCD I found that the auto leveling calibration is now working as expected. I never heard back from Prusa after they got the bad LCD back, but my assumption was that there was something a bit off with the assembly that both led to the early failure and messing with the leveling.

Thanks for the time you took for the in depth reply. I will see if those suggestions makes a difference.
