Hope I'm doing something wrong.

I'm a Prusa Fanboy 1st off. I've always day 1 ordered mk3, mk2.5 to mk3, mmu2, then sl1 even despite not receiving products when announced. Just posting my experience looking for help.

SL1 arrived last Friday, May 17. Didn't try it out to first night, because I still needed to purchase lots of alcohol, old resin storage, bigger filter funnels, more gloves etc. (Thanks Joan) But figured let me calibrate it, update firmware etc.

Selftest:

Problem 1.

One of the screws that lock the resin tank onto the screen won't thread properly into the screen. If I take that same screw and try to thread it into the other side of screen it doesn't thread also. The good screw threads on both sides of the screen. I tried rotating the resin tank. Made sure the tank was aligned on the screen etc. Tech support wants me to send them pictures of the screws.

Problem 2.

I can't see the Prusa Logo when the setup wizard asks if u can see the logo. I stand up, I turn off lights.... Maybe I'm old. But once u tell the wizard u can't see the logo it says u probably have a defective screen - contact Prusa. Tech support says the logo is hard to see. (unlike the manual photo which u can clearing see the logo) Suggested try and use a cell phone and take a picture of the screen. I'll try that tonight.

That has to bite.  Hopefully they can send you a new screw and the screen will be ok.

Good luck!

if the screen is backlit, you should be able to take a flashlight to it and read it.

I have a Prusa,therefore I research.

RE: Hope I'm doing something wrong.

I saw a SL1 manual floating around online and took a look at it.  It says that you should use your camera on your phone to look for the logo because the light is UV.  It makes sense; depending on the light source there may not be much to see but it can harm your eyes to look directly at it.   Digital cameras like the one on phones do pick up UV, so that is why they were asking about smart phone pictures.

Good luck!

Ok update.
Tech support had me reflash the firmware. Still cant see logo on the uv screen with my eyes, with my phone I cant see logo on uv screen.

I was told to look under the sl1  for uv bleed. I never looked under the unit. In fact my phone does pickup up a blue light under SL1.

RE: Hope I'm doing something wrong.

The orange plastic blocks UV; you should not see any through it.  Non-UV light would still pass through I guess.

https://prusa3d.com/downloads/manual/prusa3d_manual_sl1_en_1_01.pdf

I take it page 15 is what you are looking at as far as instructions.  It does depict looking through the orange plastic, so that is not the issue.  If your camera is picking up UV from under the unit, then the UV backlight is working.    That pretty much leaves the possabilities of something being wrong with the mount for the backlight assembly (I think this is unlikely, but could be possible depending on how the internals are arranged) or the screen.  Your pictures look like the LCD is totally black. That could be a bad screen or a loose connection to the screen.  Given Prusa's QC I would assume it is most likely a wire that became loose in transit.  Have you tried to shine a flashlight on the screen?  If the screen is working you should be able to see through it with a flashlight; if it is totally masked/darkened you will see nothing but your reflection.

Yup I tried the flashlight b4 posting this, no luck. I think its a probably a loose connector also, but idk.

Quality Control:

no factory check list shipped

1 of the thumb screws has a larger diameter then the other one and does't fully thread (so i cant properly secure tank to uv screen)

uv screen doesn't work. could be it never worked (no check list, idk). If it came loose in transit, it was't secured properly. So either not a connector with a clamp or no hot glue, idk.

Waiting for tech my rep to respond to pic.

No clamp.  The screen uses a ribbon cable.  This is almost certainly your problem here.

The assembly for the UV LED's is not likely to become detached or something.

Ok after exhausting all simple troubleshooting Prusa wants the SL1 back for evaluation. Will ship a new unit in the mean time but didn't say when new SL1 will ship.

Still a fanboy but after waiting since 9/22/18 getting a unit with quality control issues sucks.

RE: Hope I'm doing something wrong.

I hear ya.  It is frustrating to wait so long to get a dud.  My head would probably explode.  >.<

About when yours was shipped I was told that 5 units were just shipped.  That surprised me that they only shipped 5.  It makes me wonder if they were still working out the QC measures.  While that might explain why there was no QC checklist, but not having a matching set of screws is weird.  Since they redesigned the screen assembly from beta feedback maybe they had to change screws and one of the old screws made its way into the batch of new screws?

May your new unit come soon and in working order!  🙂
