Room Temperatures

Hi,

I will receive my SL1/ CW1 in 2 days.  Because of the resin fumes I won't be printing in my house, but out in my detached shop.  What are your minimum room temperature recommendations for good prints (C/F).  I will be using the standard Prusa resins that come with the printer.

Thanks,

Mike

RE: Room Temperatures

According to the SL1 handbook:

- Working temperature range: 18C - 32C indoor use only
- W
orking humidity: 85% or less

Have a look at my models on Printables.com 😉

Thanks.  I guess I would have gotten the SL1 handbook Tuesday afternoon and seen this for myself.

Or you can use the on-line handbook: https://cdn.prusa3d.com/downloads/manual/prusa3d_manual_sl1_en_1_3.pdf

It is always best to look here as it get updated form time to time.

RE: Room Temperatures

I have easily made a heater that fits inside my SL1 using a 12v DC power supply (left over from an old external HD), 24v (runs on 12v) heating films (Amazon) stuck onto thin steel plates (Lowes), held in place with magnets (Amazon), 12v brushless mini fans (Amazon) and a 12v electronic heating/cooling thermostat (Amazon).  The design is not pretty, but it works and can easily be removed.  The heating elements fit into the enclosure with the thermostat on the outside of the cabinet held in place with a magnet.  Other, more elegant options I had looked into and are used with other SLA printers are too large for the enclosure — the SL1 seems well designed.  My printer is in my garage and the temperature inside can dip into the 40’s F (5-8 C).  The heater can maintain the temperature at 90 F ( 32 C) or anything lower I desire.  If anyone is interested, I can put together photos and a source list.

@daniel-c14

Would you mind sharing a photo of that setup? I am intrigued.

Attached are 4 photos of the setup. As I said, it isn't very elegant. The parts are easily obtained from Amazon and a local hardware store. An incubator size thermostat ( https://www.amazon.com/DZS-Elec-Temperature-Controller-Programmable/dp/B07K68JJY1), 4 heat strips ( https://www.amazon.com/24V-Flexible-Polyimide-Heater-Plate/dp/B074SXKPZL), 9 magnets (1 to hold thermostat, 2 behind each plate - stacked), 2 micro fans ( https://www.amazon.com/Honbay-x25mm-x10mm-Brushless-Cooling/dp/B06Y2X95D8), 4 steel plates (2x4 joiners) and a 12v DC power supply (heat strips will work fine on 12v) and wire.

I forgot the coat hanger wire to hold the fans.

RE: Room Temperatures

The idea with the magnets is great. And you stack the elements? so its like heater, steel plate, magnet, heater, steel plate, magnet?

Did you try to get away with just one pair of heaters?

@fookatchu

Heat strip has adhesive and sticks to steel plate. So its stacked on the back of printer chamber: 2 magnets, steel plate with heat strip, 2 magnets, steel plate with heat strip.

I did try using only one pair of heaters and it worked.  I liked this better because it heats faster and maintains well.  Also the order comes with 4 heat strips.  The 12v DC power source I had on hand was for an external hard drive that went bad.  It drives the whole thing well.

RE: Room Temperatures

Thanks for the description! I will gladly copy your approach to keep my windows open. I had multiple ruined prints on my Photon where I suspect that the temperature might be the culprit (7-15 degC).
