Prusa Slicer Support Tweaks

I have imported a 5MM Round CUP SETTING STL file into PRUSA SLICER.  I have AUTO sliced the setting after using OPTIMAL ORIENTATION, the only issue is that on the .4MM  thick base where the  one support attaches, on the opposite side the support projects through the wall and makes a small nub on the opposite side. I tried playing with it but no luck, I thought maybe change shape of supports but I am not finding that option.

Click on the object and on the left side of the screen there is a hexagon with lines coming out of it... click that and select manual editing of the SLA support points.  Then you can add, remove or move the support points.

I have been playing with manual editing but you can not change the penetration/ orientation of the support once it has been generated by slicing. I am not even able to change my object Z orientation independently, I lift it up with move on Z and it drops right back down no matter what. Could the problem be working trying to work on such a small scale as only ONE support is AUTO generated. What am I missing, thanks Maxwell.

The bottom left corner has 3d editor view and preview.  Use the 3d editor view, then press the L key.  Then a menu will appear that says 'manual editing.'  The view will switch to show the placement and orientation of all the points that have already been generated.    There is no 'penetration' setting I am aware of, but there is a 'head diameter' setting.

Thanks again, I think I have tried the variants you suggested, if the object contact point  was thicker than .4mm the nub would probably not appear. I want to sort out these issues before I get my pre-ordered SL-1 and stay focused on small accurate components that I design. Should I contact support or pose the question elsewhere?  Cheers, Michael

Have a STL you can attach to the post so I can take a look at it?

Thanks Maxwell, I prefer to keep my STL file private but here is a photo of my problem. Everything is good except for that grey nub you can see. If I reproduce the part the problem gets reproduced, it is a lot more trouble to clean up than you would imagine. This is the first part I can visualize as useful and I want to get it right.

I think I have the solution you are looking for.  In 'print settings' there is a section called 'supports' and under that is 'support head penetration.' This is too high for the size of the wall you have in the model, so bring that down and reslice.

Maxwell, I have done that but no changes in results. The head penetration returns to default .4mm when I change it to .2mm. Also I do not seem able to change the support head width. I have played with it, not much luck.

RE: Prusa Slicer Support Tweaks

The setting can be changed.  Are you sure you are using PrusaSlicer 2.0 and not the pre-release version?  I know some of the betas had issues with inputting some parameters.

This preview was made after the above change and re-slicing.  The preview does not show the changes in this view, apparently.

However, in the slice view it shows the updated head penetration.

Maxwell, that was good, I have gone from idea to the 3d ready to print item, cool. I feel like I have my feet on the ground now, BIG THANKS!

Maxwell, I used optimal orientation and then auto support and it looks good but when I slice and it is ready for export the preview shows that red coloring at the top rim. What is that indicating? Thanks again.

RE: Prusa Slicer Support Tweaks

The red shows the highest displayed layer, in this case the top layer of the entire print.

The orange bar to the right of the preview shows the top and bottom of the selected layers.  It shows all layers by default.  In the picture above, I have it starting at layer 1 and ending partway through the print.  Since layer 470 is the highest selected, it shows the part of the print that is in that layer in orange (violet for the supports in that layer).  This lets you check layer by layer for any issues like features that start printing in mid-air without any supports.  It is considered to be a good idea to always run through this to look for any issues before you print.

Alternatively, you can 'export' and rename the .sl1 file to .zip - this is because the sl1 file is just a zip file containing a config text file and a series of numbered .png files for each layer.  The main reason you would want to do this in stead of (or in addition to) using the slicer's built in preview is to look over antialiasing.  I have found the AA to be very good in this software, so that will generally be unnecessary.

Phew, great, not a problem after all. Thanks for taking the time for that explanation. I have been working on this 3D project for over a year. Thanks

That is not necessary.  I am just trying to help out.  🙂  Fortunately, I have gone through some of the same issues, so I happen to know the answers.  Posting this stuff helps future people who might have trouble too. 🙂
