Initial Supplies?

As the kits start to flow, I thought I'd start a thread getting suggestions on supplies/gear to get before it arrives.

My list so far:

  • IPA (91%, 6 quarts)
  • Gloves (I've got nitrile, we'll see how they do)
  • Narrow spatula/scraper (for Joan-style resin scraping)
  • An idea for first print (still working on that)
  • wide-mouth bottles (some nalgene, some polypropelene, 500ml and 1000 ml)

For those of you with a few weeks/months of experience, anything I'm missing?

(btw, I looked for a comparable thread and didn't find one.  If I missed it, pointers welcome...)

RE: Initial Supplies?

zero experience here,(SL1 wont be delivered for another month or two) I did my own searching, and I think to add to the list would be paper cone paint filters @ around 200-100um filter mesh. This being used to filter out cured particles before storing in a used resin storage bottle.

If you are concerned about health and dealing with smelly resin for whatever reason, a paint respirator will do the trick when handling resin.

I personally will be cutting out plastic sheeting from harbor fright to keep things easy to contain, i.e. spilled a bit of resin, uv flashlight cure the resin and then toss out. I will be working in a home office room where that would be warranted.

I use cheap aluminium drink cans 400ml.

The most you should need to storr is one vat of any colour.  Bigger storage is a waste of space.

A bigger funnel is good for emptying youe cw1 vat occasionally

Ipa is hygroscopic so it will absorb moisture is left open.

Also allowing the solvent to settle in a translucent container (somewhere dark) will allow you to drain off the clearer solvent for reuse and separate out the solid pigments from opaque resins. Otherwist these tend to contaminate your prints.

Small sharp painter's pallet knives are easier to use than the big prusa scraper.

hi Paul.

I think Daniel meant breathing mask

When he said Filter...

However I have also bought similar 3M filters like the ones you showed, to  strain the resin

He was talking about respirators later on, but early on he said "paper cone paint filters @ around 200-100um filter mesh".  I'm curious if I'll get filterable particles in my old IPA, or just one big glob of gel.

I've got a good face mask with replaceable cartridges (for woodworking with nasty woods), but I'll need to poke into the right filter for nasty organic fumes...

Why buy a mask?  Breath deeply and enjoy.  Just kidding - the smells can be overwhelming.
