MK3.5 self-test and calibration without filament sensor

The filament sensor on my MK3.5 failed.  The display kept telling me that the printer was not calibrated, but it was making good prints, so I did not address the issue.  I simply turned off filament sensing in the menu.   It swallowed a broken filament below the extruder gears so I can't use the unload function to remove the filament.  I removed the nozzle tip, but there is nothing exposed that I can pull on to remove the fragment.  My plan is to heat up the hot end and push the fragment thru the nozzle with a wire, but the hot-end wont heat up.  When I try and use the unload or pre-heat functions to heat the hot-end, it reboots and displays a message that the printer has not been calibrated.  I updated the firmware last month and it has been working fine with the filament sensor disabled.  How can I heat the hot-end so I can clear the clog?
