Black Screen - flikkering icons

Hi, Just upgraded my mk3s to Mk3.5.

First day no issue, second day the screen goes black after the boot finishes.

I saw that Mk4 have the same issue for month (see the Mk4 forum)... I am worried that no one by Prusa is trying to solve this issue.

after some reboot it is gone. No clue if it is software or hardware. Some are saying it is the proximity of the screen cable with oter components, some are saying that it is the firmware... I hope this we be solved soon.

Hello BM,

RE: Black Screen - flikkering icons

I have also had the same/similar issue. Screen goes blank after boot. This actually happened a few times the first time I used the printer after the upgrade but then it, after a few reboots, it started working again. Fast forward to a couple of weeks of working propertly, it started to show that blank screen after booting.

So I removed, cleaned and reinstalled the ribbon cable from both the LCD and the motherboard, moved the ribbon cable away from the stepper motor cables, rebooted without the USB drive, was using the latest firmware, booted without the power panic cables connected.  None of it made a difference.

When I contacted support, they asked for a video of the screen when booting. I started recording the video and the screen started working again. So the solution is to video the LCD on boot. (lol, joking).

But support then said that the printer works and to clean the ribbon cable with compressed air and to get in touch if it happens again. I'm not sure that a printer with an intermittent problem is a working printer but there you go.

The only difference I can think of, the only thing I did differently, is that I took control of the printer using prusaconnect. If it happens again, I'll try prusaconnect again and see if it was what got the LCD to wake up again.

In my case, I removed the ribbon from the guides and it is lying now on the side of the machine, no problem since then...

It comes backs every time I set the cable back in place.

I am waiting for more motivation to contact Prusa support again...

But appart from that the machine works great 👍

RE:

Have you tried to make the cable fail while testing conductivity? That does sound like a faulty cable where a conductor is damaged/strained.

I'm keen to hear whether this fix lasts long term. My ribbon cable is also not in the guides but the blank screen still happens.

And I haven't found anything that seems to affect whether the blank screen happens or not. I've also tried the usual things suggested by support which didn't make a difference. I also tried USB drive out and in, power off reboot, reset button reboot, printer is cold, printer is preheated. I can't seem to make the error occur nor can I do anything to stop it. Frustrating when nothing seems to actually make any difference.

I think (guess) that Prusa is reluctant to replace hardware at the moment because they themselves don't know what the cause is yet. Nevertheless, they are sending me a new cable and LCD. I do hope that the cause is hardware because if it isn't, then the same issue will keep happening.

Merci Prusa !

RE: Black Screen - flikkering icons

Hey team,

I recently purchased the MK3.5S upgrade kit along with the official Prusa enclosure. After full assembly, I ran into the same LCD issues that many others have reported:

Flickering screen

Black screens

Inverted colours

Half-screen display

This happened right on first startup after the boot logo, which was pretty disheartening.

What Didn’t Work

Releasing the LCD ribbon from zip ties and organiser clips (to reduce pinching) – no change.

Connecting via USB to reflash potentially corrupted firmware – no change.

Reseating both ends of the connector multiple times – no change.

What Did Work

The only thing that made a difference was ensuring the connector blocks were sitting perfectly flush and straight. The LCD ribbon on the MK3.5S sits under a lot of pressure inside both the xBuddy board case and along the LCD housing. If the connector block is even slightly crooked (you can barely tell), the pins don’t seem to seat properly.

When I pressed both connector blocks flat and made sure the part of the ribbon immediately  after was flattened. It worked normally. As soon as I let go, the cable tension pulled the connector crooked again and the issue came back.

My fix was to reroute the LCD ribbon and nearby cables so there was no sideways pressure on the connector blocks. Since doing that, the printer has run normally, including through all calibrations and prints.

Recommendation

If you’re seeing similar screen glitches:

Check that both ends of the LCD ribbon are fully seated and flush.

Make sure the cable routing doesn’t put pressure on the connectors.

Reroute or release other cables so the LCD ribbon isn’t being twisted or bent at the block ends.

This reminded me of my old wired earbuds, where you’d have to bend the cable at just the right angle to get sound. The LCD ribbon seems very sensitive to pressure at the connector points, so getting that seating perfect seems to make all the difference.

Hope this helps anyone else running into the same issue.

To be honest I just left the ribbon float aside of the machine and forgot about it... not really neat solution, but I haven't had any issue since then...
