Deformed filament ends after printing with one color

I have an MK3S+ with an MMU3.  The MK3S+ started as an MK3 and was upgraded to an MK3S and then an MK3S+.  The MMU3 started as an MMU2 and was upgraded to an MMU2S and then an MMU3.

This has started happening within the past 6 months or so, and happens will all types and brands of filaments.  When I print a single color print the filament is retracted back to the MMU and it has a small hook or other deformation on it.  This stops the filament from being fed through the extruder and the next print, if I don't cut the filament, won't print anything--it will be like there's no filament there.

I've attached some really crappy pictures of what's happening.  I'm sorry they are so crappy.  It's tough to get clear pictures this close up.

Does anyone know what's wrong and how to fix it?  If not, does anyone know how to tell the printer to always cut the filament before feeding it?

Thanks!
