MK4S/MMU3 How can I get into the Tool Mapping manually

I recently wanted to use a small rest of filament and continue with a new one on the next position. I sent the job via prusa connect to the print queue and expected to get into the "Tools Mapping" dialog when starting the print on the printers UI. But it did not appear after starting the print and it stalled on filament runout.

Is there a way to get manually into the menu to define a spool-join? Or under what conditions will the dialog appear?

Can it also assigned on the prusa slicer?
My firmware is 6.4.0

You can do it through Prusa Connect, but it’s not exactly intuitive.  Don’t start it by clicking on Print.  Instead, click on the file you want to print, then scroll down to the mapping section.  There, you can assign filament(s) as desired.  Finally, click on “Add to Queue”.  Do NOT click on Print.  Of course, you’ll also have to set Ready to start the queue.  Not intuitive, but it gets the job done in typical Prusa style.

wow, interesing! New for me. But this needs to download the gcode before, isn't it?

And is there a way to get into the tool mapping menu on the printers display also?

Select Print on the LCD display.  The only way I know to start the mapping is to tap the leftmost tool assignment on the display (no way to select it with the knob).  Then it will let you select the tool on the right, and either replace or join.

Dear Mike, thank you!
The important thing for me is, how I can get into the tool mapping dialog. There are only a few conditions when this Tool mapping dialog will be shown. When it comes up I know how to deal with it and how to assign a spool-join. My knowlege leak is how to induce that screen.

RE:

As long as the MMU is enabled, selecting a file to print from the front panel will bring up that tool assignment page.

And BTW, thanks for bringing this up!  I learned how to do it through Prusa Connect, which I didn't know before...  🙂

But @Mike-b-3, I cannot confirm that the tool mapping screen comes up every time I start a print from UI-panel. I think there is a difference if you only file a job to the printer or if you send it to the print queue.
Via ChatGBT I asked similar and I got the information, that a queue-job will be prescanned  to read out the tools requested by the gcode. After this a tool assignment is not possible anymore.

I also found out when starting the print with already loaded material information (load to mmu enhanced mode) I got no tool mapping dialog. Further when filament is already loaded to the nextruder you get a question if you want to start printing with the loaded filament. If you anser with YES you do not get the Tool mapping dialog. Only if you say NO, the filament will be unloaded and you get the dialog.
So I see various scenarios, but with no guarantee to make assignments or a spool join, which my basic intention was.

RE:

Let's see, I only have 2 workflows, and I know it works from the front panel in both cases:

  1. Use Prusa Connect to load the file to the printer, and add it to the print queue.  Then I decide I need to remap, so I go to the front panel and select print, then select the file to print (note I am not setting the printer "ready" here).  The mapping screen comes up.
  2. Use Prusa Connect to load the file to the printer, but don't add it to the print queue, or remove it from the queue after adding it.  Then go to the front panel and select the file again to print.  The mapping screen comes up.

In both cases, I've pre-loaded the filaments using the "Advanced load to MMU" function from the front panel before starting the print.

I agree some of the other workflows you mention might skip the mapping screen.

BTW, I've been trying to use the remapping from Prusa Connect without success.  I tried several combinations - I can select the mapping fine, but starting the print from Connect always selects the default mapping.   I might need to read up on this...
