Well, finally Josef Prusa stated that they will be shipping it end of March. 2 more months.

maybe 3 depend on your queue order.

No they will try to do everything they can to begin shipping in march. Just look at the upgrades for the Enclosure that are in development since years or how long it took to release mk4 psu quick release. (XL etc.)

I love Prusa printers … that’s why I own 5 but I totally understand people getting frustrated if they just want a working machine out of the box.

The Support chat told me 2 days ago they’re just wrapping things up for the MMU3 but if you read closely in the update it says they’re not done with testing and redesigning some parts and thinking about making the nextruder main plate a consumable.

I will still stick with the mmu3 as I want to support quality and machines build or designed in the EU. But the communication strategy with the community that already invested money into a project s..ks.

But its a crazy business you can’t tell to much about your products or strategy even tho you’re open source because maybe some Chinese company will just copy paste your stuff in half of the time and half of the costs.

And Prusa has to survive too so maybe think about the changing industry since Bambu etc and if that’s good for you or not.

I am curious about the main plate being considered consumable. Will it end up being a part that we reprint and replace every few months? Will it be a part that will be manufactured and we have to buy and have spares available?

I would think it almost would need to be a consumer printable part. The cost of shipping the piece to those outside the local area (UK, USA, other places of distance) would make it too much of a prohibited solution.

I saw the announcement and I am concerned that Prusa is only certifying the MMU3 for PLA and PETG.  I purchased the MMU3 for two main reasons, multiple colors and to be able to use soluble filaments for supports.

I've never used soluble filaments before but I don't think they are PETG or PLA.

In also wanted to try multi color TPU filament.

I hope that Prusa adds support for more different types of filament in the near future.

Copied directly from the email from Josef Prusa:

News from the development and new shipping estimate

Hello,

We want to share the latest developments and updates on our MMU3 for the MK4.

Both internal and external tests with PLA are overwhelmingly positive. We have spent the last couple of weeks fine-tuning PETG, and we are also getting good results. These are the two materials the MMU3 will officially support. If you need to print other polymers, it is likely possible, but we want to clearly state that only PLA and PETG are the materials we have extensively tested and officially support.

MMU3 beta testers

Apart from our internal testing department, we have a team of fantastic external beta testers, who have been testing every step of the development thus far. Many changes made to the MMU3 were based on their feedback. We are now giving them the green light to start posting their experience with the MMU3, so you might start seeing pictures and videos of it online.

MMU3 integration in Prusa Connect

As we continue testing the MMU3 for the MK4, the Prusa Connect team has added new functionality. The MK4 can newly report to Prusa Connect if the MMU3 unit is connected. Prusa Connect is now also able to read the currently active MMU3 slot and display the information in the status bar.

Technical updates and resolved issues

Layer shifts - In our testing, we had problems with random layer shifts. These were quite rare, but since the print cannot be saved if the problem occurs, they were very annoying to encounter. The prints were clean with nothing the nozzle could crash into. The culprit turned out to be a bug in the firmware, occurring only when the MMU unit is connected. We believe we have fixed the problem in our latest internal firmware build. We continue to investigate the issue, to make sure the problem is completely eliminated.

Spool holders - The spool holders and filament buffer remain the only components where we are still doing significant changes. Our tests show that on the MK4, where the length of the unloaded filament  is slightly longer compared to the MK3S+, filament tension in the buffer and from the spool holders impacts reliability. We are testing different setups to see which work the best.

Enhancements to printed parts - Over the last period of testing, we have made several improvements to the printed parts. We are now printing the production version of these parts, but further testing is necessary to ensure they function without causing any new issues.

Wear of the Nextruder main plate - Lastly, we are investigating wear of a part which guides the filament from the drive gears into the nozzle tube. The wear is caused by repeated loads and unloads of filament. Without the MMU, this wear is insignificant. However, a single MMU print can have thousands of filament loads and unloads, increasing the wear rate. Once this part wears out, the printer is unable to properly push filament into the nozzle. We're testing different materials and manufacturing methods for this part to maximize its lifespan while maintaining functionality. It's possible this part will be treated as a consumable, requiring replacement every few months.

Shipping date estimate

We are committed to ensuring the MMU3 for the MK4 is a reliable and effective upgrade and we’re doing everything we can to begin shipping it by the end of March. Thank you for your patience.

Happy Printing!

Josef Prusa

I’m on the fence with this. Should I order and XL and sell my mk4/mmu3. I don’t like the part about there may be a consumable in the nextruder. I don't want to be taking that apart every few months to replace a part.

I can't imagine that. It's probably a part that can be easily replaced from the outside.

Replacing the main board in the Nextruder is not difficult. You remove the filament and unlock the pressure arm. Unscrew the 3 screws on the gearbox cover and carefully remove the entire gearbox including the screws and the main plate. You take off the black main plate and put on a new one. Make sure that the new main board is in the same position as the original one. Do not remove the gears from the metal ring! Also, be careful not to lose the weak washer on the motor shaft, this washer is usually glued with grease in the middle on the back of the gears. Then you put everything back and screw in the 3 screws. Attention, after reassembly, you must calibrate the gearbox according to the instructions on the printer screen! The entire operation, including calibration, takes less than ten minutes

Well, I just read the email update.  I'm not feeling great about them still having some issues to resolve and another promised aim date.  I'm cancelling my paid backorder and using that money towards a different printer with multi-material and will wait and see how this plays out over the next year or so.  I mean, really, Prusa must be working on something CoreXY between the MK4 & the XL.  Perhaps that will have an AMS unit that starts fresh rather than being  mods to a design that has a checkered past.  Sadly, the timelines on that are not likely fantastic.  Now the question which machine I order, Bedslinger or CoreXY...  I may be starting down the dark path.

If you have the money, and it doesn’t matter, get the XL. You’re buying a pig in a poke with the MMU3. The experience with the MMU2 is not encouraging. The XL just prints and prints and prints.  Plus, it is actually multi material capable. If you’re not going to get an XL, I’d get that other bamboo or whatever model can take up to 16 colors.

The MMU is years late, 11 spools I’ll do it I just want to know short, and just not worth the time.

Put the deposit down on the XL to get a place in the line.  (New orders will be processed during the first half of 2024.)  It is going to be a while before you get one.

Get the MMU3 for the MK4 and try it out.  If you really hate it, then sell it after you receive the XL.    If you like the MMU3 / MK4 then you can cancel the XL order at no cost.

At least with the MK3 the new firmware and H/W changes is a vast improvement of the MMU2.

I upgraded my MMU2s to the MMU3. I wonder how much difference there will be between the MMU3/MK3s and the MMU3/MK4. Hopefully it just some printed parts.

I expect it's just a cable form which replaces the Dupont connectors and Power lugs, with a 12 pin, (2X6) connector at the bottom end.
The MMU3 already has the daughter board, and revised plastics
