Cable MMU3 to MK4

My MMU3 on the MK3 is running. The only difference (beside Firmware) to the MK4 version is the cable to the xbuddy board.

Any idea how the pin assignment should be? There is a pin assignment of the xbuddy board available.

But I'm wondering how to wire it correctly

I know. But the only difference will be the cable and probably some changes on the nextruder. If I have the cabel I could make some tests to see how far I can go.

I want to think that if it were as you indicate, MMU3 would already be available for MK4.

Actually the MMU3 for the MK4 is running and was presented lately on a printer show. According to Prusa it is not reliable enough to sell it. That's the point: I want a bit experience and see how good it already is.

RE: Cable MMU3 to MK4

I only use the MMU for ease of loading different materials.  I rarely print in more than one colour so I don't really care how good the filament changes are I just want a basic MMU working.

I've had a very quick look at the pinouts for the xBuddy Board compared to the Einsy-Rambo Board.  Not as straightforward as I'd hoped.  The Einsy-Rambo MMU header has 5 pins but the xBuddy header has 12 which means that it will need more than a new plug.  I suspect that the required cable will connect differently at the MMU end as well.  Plenty of variations possible with the new MMU3 control board.

RE:

The MMU3 uses a Standard MMU2 controller board, plus a small daughter board. which I believe contains a Buck Regulator, and  connects to the data and power connectors on the mmu controller.

the Mk4 to MMU3 cable handles both power and data I don't know why it requires 12 wires, where as the mk3/mmu2 had two cables 4 wire data and 4 power wires. the MMU3 daughter board uses the new style  of connectors

Do you know of a source for the cable?

I expect Prusa will make the cable available when they release the MMU3 kit for the Mk4 Printers.

I saw the video you posted of the MMU3 and MK4 in action. I wonder where the owner got his cable?

RE: Cable MMU3 to MK4

The Printer I saw, was owned by Prusa. and it was on their stand at the show, so I suspect the cable bundle came from their secret stockpile in Prague...

Miklas, and Shane, were both on the stand, chatting with Users.

there were other prusa Reps. on the stand, but I didn't recognise their names.

RE: Cable MMU3 to MK4

I made a cable for MMU 3 (PD Board) to MK4 Controller back in August (2023), at that time the MK4 firmware would error saying "MMU Firmware Update Needed", it said the MMU firmware was incompatible with the MK4 firmware (I'm still not aware of any MK4 specific firmware for the MMU3).

Easiest way to make the cable is to buy the prewired double ended 2x6 connector cable assembly, and a separate 1x8 pin connector for the PD-Board. Just remove the wires from one of the 2x6 connectors and slide them into the 1x8. No crimping, no questionable connections, etc.

Be aware that Slicer 2.7.1 does not allow you to configure an MK4 with the MMU3, no multi-color slicing yet, so this is all just an exercise in futility.

I'll double check this again tomorrow, and update my post, but very sure with latest MK4 firmware the MMU3 is recognized, and I could load each filament with the printer  menu / controller.

Will post my cable pin outs tomorrow, have an early AM meeting, already up too late !!

No, it’s reliable enough to sell it. Just not reliable enough to deliver it.

Update . . . I'm running MK4 firmware v5.1.2 & MMU3 firmware v3.0.1. Once you enable MMU in "settings" the printer does recognize the MMU3. I can load filament using the MK4 menu / controller. I'm able to load filaments to the MMU tubes 1-5 and to the Extruder. Haven't tested anything beyond this, be careful and watch your printer like a hawk if you go down this path.

OK, so here's my wiring diagram MK4 to PD-Board on MMU3. HUGE DISCLAIMER !! . . . do this at your own risk, I take no responsibility if you fry your xBUDDY board or MMU PD-Board !! If you have no clue what your doing, please exercise patience and wait for the official releases from Prusa.

I also wonder if Prusa's official cable will use dedicated +24V & GND wires to the PSU, similar to MK3 wiring.

Correction: I bought a couple prewired Molex 8-wire cables with two 1x8 connectors (molex 5025780800), then used a 2x6 connector (molex 5031491200), unclipped the necessary wires, moved them to proper locations on the 2x6 to make my cable

Curious to see if someone takes this forward to the next step . . . print something multicolored on an MK4 !!

Enjoy -mp

Not knowing what I was doing never stopped me before (it's been rather expensive, however).  I'll give it a try.

Thanks

RE: Cable MMU3 to MK4

IMPORTANT: Use this updated wiring diagram, although my connector image is oriented correctly I had the pin numbering opposite. There is a super tiny triangle, so hard to see, on the connector to denote pin 1.

Correct drawing is named: MK4 to MMU3_corrected 1x8 pin numbering 01-16-24.png

That's great thanks.  I'm quite happy to have a go and see what I can get the MMU to do.  I just use it for filament management and rarely print multi colour.
