RE: Cable MMU3 to MK4

The latest mmu is only for 5.2 printer fw. Downgrade the mmu3 to the version before and it should work. But be aware that in the current state, if you use the nextruder gears, it might/will damage the gears without main plate modifications that will come with the official release.

I fixed the idler pin falling out by wrapping it in two layers of cling film. That seemed to be just enough.

My MMU3 cable arrived. I was somewhat happy that it didn't make any difference in printing than my homemade one. Somewhat unhappy that I paid $30 (shipping to the US) for the new one.

My cable showed up as well. Looks like firmware mismatches though as I'm also getting errors. I tried downgrading the MMU3 to older firmware as mentioned above with both the 5.1.2 and 5.1.3 printer firmwares but no luck. Assuming things are publicly release soon though I'm not going to spend any more time until official releases are out. Thanks everyone for the lively discussion.

HEUREKA!
First I was messing around with creating a MK4 - MMU3 configuration. Always had loading problems or purge failure. Then I got encouraged using the MK3 compatibility mode. I created a MK3 - MMU3 configuration with all MK4 inputshaper values. In the MK3 printer profile I added some start-gcode:

M708 A0x0b X10 ; pushing the filament a bit further after filment senor activated

M593 X T2 F42

M593 Y T2 F41.2 ; my input shaper values

I printed the planetary gear with 3 colors:

Print time was 5h30 min (vs 8h with the regular MK3 profile). 200 tool changes. No trouble.

Configuration will follow.
With this result I'm really wondering why Prusa is keeping the MMU3 for the MK4.

after testing this out a little using the newest PrusaSlicer profile for the MMU3 MK4, i'm finding it's still not loading the filament at the appropriate time even with these additions. i'm testing out different loading lengths to see if i have better luck

Increase the value at the M708 command. I had to got up to X19. I'm waiting for a new firmware (MK4 and MMU3) and hope that this will be adressed.

RE:

Firmware 3.03 for the MMU3 and 6.0.0-RC1 for the Mk4 were released on Github a few hours ago.  Unfortunately they still have not released the print files for the Nextruder parts needed.  Reading the information on the release page it says that it is just some printed parts that are needed as the position of the filament sensor needs to be changed.

It is possible to load the new firmware files and play around but be advised, you will have to re-run calibration to set the Nextruder back to standard and disable the MMU before you can print the new parts!  You have been warned!

FYI, this is what we've all been waiting for, they finally posted the MMU3 to MK4 Nextruder assembly & setup instructions, sections 9A and 10A. This should show any new parts required for the extruder mod.

RE: Cable MMU3 to MK4

Getting there!  As I have mentioned begore I only print with single colours and mainly use the MMU3 as a material changer.  Using Volker's excellent modified GCode (extra load distance) I can run the MMU3 on my Mk4 with the latest slicer profiles without any problems.  Next issue - I print a lot with PC Blend and TPU.  Does anyone have a decent workflow to get this to work easily?  At the moment I'm slicing with the standard Mk4 (non MMU) profile then manually selecting the Tool but that won't feed the filament far enough to start.  The only solution I have found is to PreLoad to Nozzle then keep pressing Purge More until the filament flows.  It works but is not ideal.

RE: Cable MMU3 to MK4

Prusa has not yet posted the MK4-MMU3 extruder part files . . . but I expect they'll show up here soon; be aware they need to be printed with PC filament, the filament sensor part looks like it needs a specific magnet / metal part to fucntion.

https://www.printables.com/model/531604-mmu3-printable-parts/files

In this forum-thread are the instructions to make your own MK4 - MMU3 cable, but you can just purchase this from Prusa E-Shop, or wait for your MMU3 / upgrade kit.

Prusa Slicer 2.7.3 now supports MK4 with MMU3 in Configuration Assistant.

Hope that helps,

Yes, precisely because Josef has released the software and slicer, I wonder why he hasn't released the components yet.

So we're waiting again for the next one... For a year now... 🙂

Nice catch on that magnet (I'm thinking like you are)! Where'd you see they had settled on PC for the filament. That part I've not seen anywhere before.

RE: Cable MMU3 to MK4

See the MMU3 build page, Section 9A Step 9, it describes the reason why the original extruder idler lever parts are being discarded, they indicate PETG is not good enough and could bend over time. So I assume they'll use PC or PCCF, if you browse the Prusa XL printable parts they call out specific filaments for critical parts and even state if they're "IS Ready"

Read through this thread, maybe page 2, I think it was Volker who provided the solution to your issue. See quote below from another user here . . .

"Using Volker's excellent modified GCode (extra load distance) I can run the MMU3 on my Mk4 with the latest slicer profiles without any problems."

Also, I haven't tried Slicer 2.7.3 yet where you can actually select Mk4 + MMU3 in Configuration Assistant, maybe others can provide feedback on their results?

RE: Cable MMU3 to MK4

I can't use the load "filament to nozzle" function on the printer itself. The filament sensor will detect the filament but then it is not grabbed correctly, hence why I am asking if this is due to the new firmware/parts. Because I read the whole thread and people could use the printer menu to load the filament without issue on the old firmware.

But just after re-reading the github release page, there is also a new setting in the menu which tells if the nextruder was modified for MMU, MMU is the default after enabling the MMU unit. I will check if this changes anything or if this can be set differently at all, if the MMU is enabled.

Load to Nozzle does work but it does not purge enough on its own.  I think the purge setting is in firmware so you can't fix it with GCode.  If you load to Nozzle you get the screen that asks if it is purging the correct colour.  Just keep pressing Purge More and it will eventually flow - maybe need to do this 10 times?  I push the filament manually at the same time just to help it along.

RE: Cable MMU3 to MK4

I got it to load but it's not reliable at all, maybe 50/50 chance. When it loads though it purges just fine.

Setting the Nextruder config to "stock" automatically disables the MMU, so there is no proper way to run it without the updated filament sensor and new parts :-(. Let's see how long it takes until the parts show up in the eshop...

RE: Cable MMU3 to MK4

Hmm . . . maybe you were late to this thread, the interim answer for non-MMU3 modded MK4 extruders was posted by @Volker on Feb 6th (page 3) in this thread. Since the non-modded MK4's filament sensor is near the top of the heatsink, and with the mod'ed extruder it will move down ~15-20mm to roughly the middle of the large filament gear of the PG assembly, it will usually fall short and fail to load properly. See section 9A of MMU3 build for MK4 extruder mod to get a visual example of what I just described above.

Volker provided this tweak to load the filament further "M708 A0x0b X10 ; extra load distance"

This works . . . make the change in Prusa Slicer / Printer Settings / Custom G-Code. . . see attached image, make sure you change it back to 5 once you get your mk4 extruder mod applied.

My hardware / firmware MK4 v6.0.0-RC1 & MMU3 v3.0.3 + home-made mmu-mk4 cable
