MMU 2.0 Filament Sensor Cover for Pass-through Couplings

If you have the MMU 2.0 and are interested in getting rid of the little white Teflon tube that nestles inside the filament sensor cover, then this new sensor cover will allow you to use a pass-thru coupling so the orange tube will reach all the way down to the sensor.

This seems to work well for me as it eliminates a potential choke point that would sometimes result in the dreaded missed layer, but your mileage may vary, use at your own risk, etc, etc.

Nice idea!

Where can we get the pass-through coupling?

That little bit of white PTFE is a problem for sure.

The other thing I'd like to do is swap the orange bowden tube for transparent. It will make troubleshooting much faster if I can immediately see the state of the filament in the tube.

My concern is that they enable the optical sensor at some point, at then you're blocking it!

Still, I'd have already done this if I'd had the model. I'll try it!

BTW: I "solve" the PTFE problem with a bright light. It's ok but not great.

In practice, it's SO easy to unscrew that I just do that. Thank GOODNESS they thought to do a metal-metal connection there.

To the person who thought I was somehow blocking the sensor (not that the damn thing works anyway), this is not the case. The orange tube now goes as far as the little white one did, not past the sensor.

Awesome, thanks!!! And thanks for the info. One of the early developers HAD shoved his tube all the way in, and you don't forget a thing like that.

Anyway, more seriously, thanks for posting. I was actually posting to tell you the end of my orange tube was already nicely relieved, and I feel if people try to "fix" theirs, they may ruin it. Perhaps a note to that effect would be useful on your Thingiverse post.

I'll try it out if my million year print ever finishes.

On and working nice. Printed on in PLA by not paying attention, first.

Then I had to recalibrate my bowden length distance, down 44 steps on each.

Ah, yes, sorry - I forgot to mention that in my instructions. I added that step (and the fact that the orange tube may already be funneled) to my Thingiverse page. I hope your mega long print came out OK. I actually successfully printed in PETG today if you can believe it, and ABS before that. I'm trying a 17-hour 4-color ABS print now. I still don't trust this thing at all, but I'm slowly taming it little by little.

I found some rough edges in (my self printed) inlet, I cleaned them up just a bit and the new tube thing has been working well.

What HAS been annoying is that the tube is just BARELY long enough - it's genuinely tight at the far ends of the travel along X.

I want to replace the tube with a longer one to get the tube back to stock length, but am not sure what to use yet. Support says the stuff is 4mm od, 2 id. I was going to try the looser Capricorn stuff next.

I agree, this leaves the tube a bit short. I have three samples of new tubing coming, two from Amazon and one from McMaster-Carr. I'm betting the stuff I picked from McMaster should work well. They typically stock good quality industrial parts. In the mean time, I'm using these frame holders which mount the MMU2 horizontal instead of gangster-leaning back. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3117468

Keep us posted on the tube. I definitely had a lighter pushing force with the Magic Orange Wonder stuff.

If it works out, I have other printers on which to use it. This purge tower and constant resetting/jamming it really making me appreciate my dual nozzle printer more. 🙂

It is pretty good. Here is an adapter i created to hold filament from my dry box and also acts as my take up.

The bottom is the amazon tube the top is the Prusa tube. The take up is the space between.

Im happy with it but i wanted the MMU on my lack enclosure so i didnt give the Prusa Orange PTFE a try to be honest.

After a little thinking:
The Prusa tube is fatter and significantly lower friction.

The ~1cm White tube is smaller diameter and nicely tapered.

I believe that is used to give smaller tips. I was using Capricorn tubing which is lower friction, and it printed ok, but I don't think it was helping. It was nice that it was clear, but not as nice as it jamming less.

I've since gone back to the original tubes, however I'm still using Brian's cover. I just bump the orange tube right up to the white one, eliminating air gap-brass-air gap transition from the OEM set up.

Right now I think this is the better way to go - a good compromise on constraints and tip shaping versus drag and transitions.
