I'm not familiar with smds and I ordered some 1k's and there about 1/3 the size of yours! Significantly smaller than the diameter of 1.75mm filament. Maybe 1mm absolute max .

I don't know if this is what tick-tock used, because this is paired with 0.5k resistors, not 1k like tick-tocks.
1206 SMD LED Diode Mini Chip 3.2mm x 1.6mm for PCB DC 20mA
= 3216M.
I have 1210 leds, so should be ok, hopefully.

The resistor value has a wide range of acceptable values. 500Ohms or 1K will work (1K or 2K total). Even 10K is visible but a bit dim.
That is a very nice write-up - kudo's to the author for the detailed instructions and providing specific parts.

Indeed a nice mod, though I don´t understand why prusa isn´t putting the sensore status on the LCD at all time. A software mod of this type should be by far easier than a hardware mod. Anyway, this is a great workaround I´ll add too, once I have a good idea for a mod that works seriously with flexible filaments.

Thanks to @ticktock for the thread and @big-bird for the link to the Bear guide. I went with 1k resistors to keep it on the dimmer side and used a red LED to keep consistency with the PINDA/FINDA.

Actually I think the question is why Prusa didn't add an LED indicator to the IR board to begin with. Simply always displaying the IR/FINDA/PINDA states on the display leaves you at the mercy of the software which could be buggy (I believe there was an issue with the FINDA getting out of sync that was recently fixed) or limited by it's refresh rate.
Having the LED indicator means that you only care about looking at it from the firmware side if you think there is a disconnect between the sensor's actual state and what the firmware believes it to be.

This is great, thank you. Mine keeps coming loose. I think I have had three successful single color prints since I upgrade from MK3 to MK3S and no successful multi color prints. Looking for some upgrade to hopefully fix some issues.

The LED mod works great. Very helpful when you cannot get the information via the LCD menu since the LCD is telling you there is an MMU load failure with no option to discard the message.

I didn't have the fancy smd resistors and LEDs but i took your idea and just soldered up a regular 1K resistor to a full size LED and while it looks nowhere near as nice since it isn't all tucked under the plastic - functionally it does the same job. I didn't realize how important direct feedback was to adjusting the filament sensor but it makes it so much easier to get the adjustment down.

Indeed. Prusa really needs to start adding it directly to the boards. The menu status is just not good enough.
I used to suggest that after working on the extruder that you disable the MMU and print as a plain MK3S until you can get through a test print with no false positives from the IR sensor. Since adding the LED, however, I find I don't need to do that anymore due to the feedback being much more direct. Now the LED mod is my first suggestion to people having MMU issues (I even have a spare already soldered that I offer to swap locally if someone isn't comfortable/able to do it themselves).

This is a great modification, and as such, I got inspired to make this other one for the FINDA sensor. Although the sensor has an LED inside on my layout is very hard to see so I come up with this: MMU2S FINDA Troubleshooting Aid or at Thingiverse: 4286871
I hope it is useful for somebody else.
