Multi Color Print - Multiple colors on same layer

Hoping someone from the brains trust can help here. I've been racking my brains to understand how this is printed and I can't (See image)

As you can see there are multiple colors "on the same layer". How do you think this was printed without a big transition tower or unless the colored parts are glued on?

Is there a way to say print the entire M all the way to the top layer in red then the S, then raise up, filament change do the Green A, raise up etc? Rather than constantly changing between each colour for every layer and every letter? The problem i see is that the extruder would hit the a fully printed letter as it moves to the next one, without a significant raise between each letter.

You've guessed it, when printing upright you will have to go through all colours on each layer, because no way you can print the next full letter without knocking down the previous one. When printing with the backside on the build plate you can minimize the time it takes to switch by only needing to switch on the top layers, but this still needs a huge purge tower. My guess would be separate glued in insets.

Use Sparse layer setting

If you have a MMU then this is an easy and relatively quick print.  Use the sparse layer setting and it will only purge on the layers with the colour change.  I would guess in the region of 25 changes for that print as the majority is the black part.
