MMU2 feasibility torture test ?

Dear MMU2 users,
I write you because I consider to buy soon a prusa i3 mk3 with the MMU2 kit.

Before doing so, I would like to know the feasibility of printing complex 3D objects with 4 different PLA colors + soluble PVA such as shown in the image below.

The model is a virtually mounted skeleton of a newborn lemur I scanned at the Université de Montpellier.

Would be so kind as to consider to give it a try on your prusa + MMU2 and send me a picture of the result (+nb of hours it took) ? The specimen has the following dimensions: 4cm*8cm*11cm. I also tried to make sure that bone thickness rarely falls below 0.5mm on the model.

i tried to assemble this in slic3r and it could not make gcode. it created the sliced layers with the soluble material at .2mm heights then on output generated a "bad allocation error" and wouldn't go any further.

so it would not even generate the time estimate or material estimates.

i tried rotating on Z 90 and scale 101

no dice least for me it will slice it just not generate Gcode.

i tried turning off supports everywhere, hit export and BANG instant Slic3r crash to desktop.

I once played around with printing a "cat scan" of a lizard.

I had to print the scan into a program and do a Boolean trick to get it to slice and print correctly.

the Boolean trick is basically make a box around the object Boolean it then Boolean the box. kinda making a mold out of it.

I have a Prusa,therefore I research.

KISS will slice the model:

However, there are loads of errors (mainly "triangles facing inwards") in the files, especially the skull/lower jaw.

Looks like slicer sliced it for me

if you look at the top of the skull, there seems to be support sticking through the skull...

without support it looks like

I tried to add G code and / or a 3mf file but they were both too large.

As peter said, there appear to be a large number or errors in the files, 2420 in trunk yellow alone.

Slic3r tries to fix them but may not have succeeded.

changing the scale to 190%

seems to reduce the amount of support coming through the skull

phew i managed to get it to slice and export. but it isn't correct.

1d 15h 8m 47s for a completion with 297.11 grams of material the gcode is 30 megs.

i'm playing around and there is still a big bad soluble material bug in 1.41.2

if i change the support material to BVOH Slic3r grenades. but if i run with normal supports it works and generates gcode.

Thanks a lot for your feedback. Yes, you are right, the stl are not totally clean and contain holes / swapped faces etc.

Commercial software that process X-ray microtomography image stacks were used to produce these mesh files (such as Avizo/Amira). And such mesh files usually convey a lot of topological inconsistencies, and need to be cleaned before being 3D printed. I tried to clean them as much as possible with Meshlab, but apparently it is not enough. Would you have recommendations to clean mesh files before feeding Prusa Slic3r?

Also, there is another potential issue: the "connective_material" stl file and the 3 others overlap somehow in space. Could it be the reason why Slic3r can't produce the gcode?

Slic3r produced Gcode for me...

No idea how satisfactory the code would be, as I have nothing to print it on at the moment.

about 47Mb for the original size. which is why I didn't include it!

did you get it to generate with full soluable material on filament spool 5?

i couldn't get it to work at all kept crashing slicer.

what were your settings the made it work?

Hi Daniel,

I wish I could send the whole '3mf' file... but it's 74Mb+

to the best of my knowledge, i set the colours
ext1 white
ext2 yellow,
ext3 Orange
ext 4 black
ext5 BVOH

If I were doing this for real, I would probably have reset the retractions to a lesser value, say 0.4mm (but I didn't in this case.

in the above picture bridging perimeters is set

in the above picture supports are enabled , contact distance is 0 (Soluble) and support is synchronised with model layers

the support and raft interfaces are set for extruder5, to minimise use of BVOH (expensive filament)

I think that's about it...

in the picture below, you can see that
an AMF file for this setup is 78+ Mb
A 3MF File is 72+ Mb
and the G code is 46+ Mb

all a bit big to attach here

almost making me want to try to print it. BUT I know I would have to mess with the pva. I really don't feel like doing that now. I also think I know what it's gonna do.

I have a Prusa,therefore I research.

I have noted that happens when it uses too much memory. I did a test a while back to see how many "extruders" could be set up. It dynamically allocates memory for each extruder and I managed to get to about 150 on my system (with 32GB RAM) before it errored and crashed.

i think i have 16gb on that machine i tried it on.

machine i'm on now has 12gb.
