Updating firmware 1.0.6 MMU2

I'm attempting to update my MMU2s to firmware 1.0.6.  When I go to update using PrusaSlicer, it appears to connect, as it lists  "Original Prusa i3 MK3 Multi Material 2.0 upgrade (COM5)" as the option. I load the hex file (prusa3d_fw_MMU2board_1_0_6.hex) and it gets an error "Flashing failed. Please see the avrdude log below".  The MMU2 makes a clicking noise.  Any suggestions?  I have tried restarting both the computer and the printer a few times. The output log is below.

Flashing Original Prusa MMU 2.0 Control, looking for VID/PID 0x2c99/3 or 0x2c99/4 ...

RE: Updating firmware 1.0.6 MMU2

I had a similar issue with mine a few months back, I was running my usb cable through a usb hub which was causing a issue,
It needed to be a direct connect to pc with no hub or extension on it.

You can try the live chat as well on the Prusa site and they may know more about the error.

Or perhaps a powered hub.

No hub, but I DO have it plugged into a USB extension cable, as I have my printer a distance away.... I hate to take my mmu2 out of the enclosure, but I'll give it a try. Thanks

@dan-e9

This is the cable I use its 10 feet and work with mine
AmazonBasics USB 2.0 A-Male to Micro B Charger Cable, 10 feet

also I did see post a while back (cant find it now) but some people where having issues with usb 3.0 ports
so they plugged them into the USB 2.0 ports on their pc, not sure if that is the issue just thought I would share just in case.

Thanks.. the port I was using is a USB2.  The cable seems to work, as windows shows the MMU2 unit...

RE: Updating firmware 1.0.6 MMU2

Hi guys -

I can't update the firmware from 1.0.5 to 1.0.6 in my MMU2. the programmer runs then pauses and reports:

Connecting to programmer: avrdude-slic3r: butterfly_recv(): programmer is not responding avrdude-slic3r: ser_recv(): read error: Device not configured

then continues with a lost of read and write errors until it exits.

I've tried different USB cables and connect the cable directly to my mac. I've updated this MMU in the past with no problem. I've done a factory reset on the MMU2 as well, but get the same errors. Any suggestions gratefully recieved!

many thanks - Will

@will-j

What version of MacOS are you running?  Just coincidentally, I updated my MMU2 yesterday with no issues from my iMac 5K running the latest MacOS “Catalina” release 10.15.2 (released to the public just a few days ago).  There were apparently flashing issues with all previous 10.15.x releases.

hi peter-n23

i'm running 10.15.1 at the moment, but I'll update, try again and report back. (I can confirm trying to update via parallels doesn't work either as noted by @david-a66 above)

When updating the MMU2 - where does the cable from the PC go? To the printer or somehow directly to MMU2?

@doug-s6

The USB cable connects to the MMU2 on the side next to the rest button, the other end goes to the computers usb port.
You only need this cable when upgrading the firmware.
