You've got to download the mmu2s firmware on the downloads page the mmu2s firmware is the mmu3 firmware with slight modification

How do you know, that it’s the mmu3 firmware with “slight modification”? (It seems the same to me, there is no mention of a 3.0.0 for mmu3 and a different for mmu2. Much like there never was a difference in mk3 firmware with or without mmu2 - but I don’t know, but I would be interested, so: how do you know?)

And why does that matter for the OP’s problem, since he is having problems running it on a mmu2s, which it officially supports?

First check the github the def in the code is slightly different and it relates because he's probably installing the one for the mmu3 not the mmu2s

Please help me out by downloading a model it's free and easy but really helps me out https://www.printables.com/@Hello_474427/models

This is another sub-thread that tends to go off-topic: Technically the flash files in prusa3d_fw_3_13_0_MK3S_3_0_0_MMU3.zip and prusa3d_fw_3_13_0_MK3S_3_0_0_MMU2S.zip are _exactly_ identical. Thus we likely can stop any speculations about flashing the wrong file.

My MK3S with MMU2 was working fine before, but now I have upgraded to both new Firmware, every time I start a print it asks me is the filament unloaded. So I click yes it then asks me which filament to load 1,2,3 etc. so I load 1, then it goes and does the bed levelling for a second time then starts the print ok and does the filament changes ok. Its just the start os the print seems stuffed. Any ideas?
I have done all the calibrations again to make sure it was good. Also the filament sensor on the MMu and the one on the Printhead are working and registering filament ok.

I have the same problem.

My problem with the idler has also been solved in the meantime. The problem was solved with the command M708 A0x19 X5.

ATTENTION : sending via OctoPrint does not work !!!

With the Arduino IDE it does work

That's what I did. The repo ( https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware ) at this time only includes the MMU2 code, no MMU3 code or reference. Same goes for the available downloads at https://help.prusa3d.com/downloads - no MMU3 firmware available for download. It's all just MMU2.

https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-i3-mmu3-hardware-firmware-and-software-help/mmu3_3-0-0814-suggestion/

Seems to be working.

And it seems difficult to post MMU2 stuff in the MMU2 sub forum and MMU3 stuff in the MMU3 sub forum - why is that?

Managed to test this now and indeed changing settings as suggested in https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware/issues/4285#issuecomment-1654784612 does solve the issue for me. Currently still running the test print but so far the reliability of my MMU2S did skyrocket with the new firmware without any hardware change. Even though I left some thick filament ends inside the tubes on purpose to produce a challenge for the test but the system mastered them without any issues so far.

While the old hardware seems almost perfect now I likely will still buy the MMU3 hardware upgrade since I like to stay up-to-date and this great work by the engineers at Prusa is worth some support from my side. Being in the embedded software business myself I am aware of how tricky those things sometimes can be.

Meanwhile, I found https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware/issues/4285 , which seems to describe my problems very well. Will try those suggestions the upcoming week.

RE: New MMU3 firmware upgrade on MK3S+ with MMU2S

Finally my summary of the behavior of the new firmware after applying the fix mentioned above:

  • MMU2S gets more reliable overall with the new firmware than the old one on the same hardware.
  • Issues due to bad filament tips have been reduced but are still happening.
  • With the new firmware, I more frequently see the selector getting blocked than before.
  • The error messages on the display are extremely helpful actually to resolve the problem. With the old firmware, I often was left puzzled about what the problem was.
  • So far I haven't seen any printer firmware crashes triggered after MMU2S loading problems that I experienced occasionally with the old firmware.

So overall the new firmware seems to improve the situation quite a lot. I hope the hardware upgrade will resolve most of the remaining issues.

I am also having the exact problem you describe. I may try factory resetting the MMU and flashing both firmwares over again, have you found a better solution?

That's exactly how mine is too, works perfectly normally otherwise

RE: New MMU3 firmware upgrade on MK3S+ with MMU2S

I managed to bulldoze my way through the problem I was having, which seemed to affect more than just me, with the start of an MMU print asking for a filament change. Here's what I did, hopefully it works for the rest of us.

Full factory reset of the printer itself, including clearing EEPROM, linked here: https://help.prusa3d.com/article/full-system-refresh-original-prusa-i3_133258 . That will sadly erase all of your printer statistics as well as bed profiles, etc. that the printer stores in memory. Also, when completing this process I had to disconnect the MMU2 from the extruder and feed the filament manually to pass the filament sensor check during the SECOND opportunity to run the wizard - as the instructions say.

Full factory reset of the MMU2 unit, using the new MMU3 instructions because I had already flashed the new firmware, linked here: https://help.prusa3d.com/article/factory-reset-mmu_510075 . This was pretty straight forward once I found the new instructions for pushing different buttons than the MMU2 instructions say.

I'm happy to say that after doing those two procedures above, and resetting my MMU2 idler screws two turns past level, it now works perfectly. The whole process probably took an hour and a half including re-running the setup wizard and re-calibrating all of the print bed profiles. I'll be ordering the MMU3 upgrade when its available, but I'm guessing, since the changes are minimal except for the firmware, I would have had to do the procedures listed above anyways to get it running.

Good luck!

Same here too, no idea why, all sensors work correctly.

Started a print yesterday with over 1000 toolchanges. With the previous firmware I always had problems. After printing for 24 hours without problems, I had to interrupt the print :-(. No problems with the MMU2S but my extruder gear came loose. Meanwhile solved the extruder problem and restarted the print.

RE:

Also an owner of the MMU2S.  I wanted to try out the new firmware and such.  It was NOT easy to install.  After flashing the motor for the idler sounded like it wanted to rip itself out of its assembly.  I had to do the firmware reset and use the Arduino IDE to send:

M708 A0x19 X5

After I did that, it works correctly.

Yikes, though.  The sound was HORRID.

The Prusa folks might want to reconsider the default value for the MMU2S

3.13.0 on a machine that went from MK3>MK3S>MK3S+

I'm sure if you do the factory resets it'll work as well but in an effort to keep my statistics and not wait for 3.13.1, I found that if you plug in the old PINDA, go to settings (not calibration), turn off PINDA Calibration then reinstall the Super PINDA, this bug can be avoided. Filament loaded normally and no grinding at the beginning of the purge.

RE: New MMU3 firmware upgrade on MK3S+ with MMU2S

So excuse my extreme noviceness with Arduino IDE, I am a Putty guy, but my printer seems to just spam output lines of code when trying to use Putty for this process.  How does one get Arduino IDE to connect to the printer? I select Tools - Port, and the COM port associated with my printer, but my serial monitor output states "Not connected. Select a board and port to continue"

My IDE version is 2.1.1 for reference.

Having the same issues, anyone out there have a step by step guide on using Arduino IDE to change the M708 A0x19 X5 settings

I actually was able to get connected to the printer, after FINALLY locating the older version from the Arduino site. The serial monitor loads as expected on the older version.
