MMU2S firmware update success rate poll

Since it's always just the problems that are being discussed here in the forum it's easy to think something is fundamentally flawed while most of the users do not experience problems.

I'd be interested in the reliability of the MMU2S firmware upgrade to 3.0.0.

Please take a minute to select the suitable experience with the upgrade if you have already done it. Thanks a lot.

RE: MMU2S firmware update success rate poll

Quite sad situation and this has continued months already without any proper support from Prusa. Is thre anyone taking the problem seriously there?????

MMU2 was reliable for me, on the original (Pre MMU3) Firmware,
After I changed the 4X2 PTFE, for 4X2.5mm PTFE.
I didn't use the Prusa Buffer

Instead I had the reels above the printer and the buffer feature was in mid air

I NOW have MMU3 with Air Buffer... and MMU3 firmware. plus the new MMU3 theme Filament sensor chimney.

Wish I'd read the forum before flashing. Wasted days trying to fix the issues, short of tossing the MMU in the bin!

all fixed by reverting back to 3.12.

all they've succeeded is to build a massive distrust in the level of their software.

I could NOT fix mine by downgrading the SW. Re-flashed 3.12 now several times and nothing helps. Bearing drum and the filament sensor block are not synced and everytime the drum turns, it will go to wrong position. And I HAVE old software now, how this is possible??? How this whole module can be destroyed now???

Adding myself to the list.  Oddly enough, it worked okay for a couple prints after the update, but when I started my first set of prints for my Mk3.9 upgrade (naturally), it started beeping during the print, saying that the MMU needed to be reset.  I'd click the button to confirm, and it would continue printing just fine.  It finished the print just fine, but again insisted it needed to be reset.  It did a LOT of grinding when I tried to do the next print and failed repeatedly to properly feed the filament.  After a factory reset, and some manual coaxing, it finally grabbed the line and did the print.  It again insisted it needed a reset while it printed, but again finished okay.  Third print though, no amount of resets, fiddling with the filament, or tinkering with the hardware worked.

I've ended up just turning off the MMU, rolling new Gcode, and feeding the filament directly into the extruder.  Just need to limp through another few print jobs.

I've got the MMU3 upgrade on pre-order, but I'm really close to cancelling it.

@alehtosalo I had to re flash it twice! Similar issues to you, the sensor block wouldn't move to line with the chosen filament. It now seems to have trouble feeding certain filaments, ironically one being Prusa filament 🤣

i, personally, wouldn't waste my money on an MMU. Its been more bother than it's worth in the past two years.

RE:

I have the exact same problem.  The selector moves to the correct position, but the idler seems to be positioned by about 10 degrees out of alignment and does not apply pressure on the filament for loading or unloading.

I went back to the older version of the firmware. Works fine now

Won’t trust upgrades in the future

MMU2S works amazingly well after the upgrade. Previously my MMU2S would always stop at least once during the print, usually more. Never got a multi-color print to go all the way without intervention. Ever since the new firmware I've already had multiple multi-color prints print flawlessly with no intervention. Today I even did a huge 4 color (all on the same layers) print that took the whole print bed with no intervention. Plus, the print was amazingly fast, much faster than I expected, probably due to the new MK3S+ firmware. I'm excited to see what happens once I upgrade to MK4 and MMU3.

RE: MMU2S firmware update success rate poll

To my eyes, this problem sounds like stepper driver issue. It does not hold the current in coils so there is no torque holding the bearing drum against the filament. Indexing issue most likely is related to the motor driver also.

I just simply cannot understand how in hell it is possible to brake the HW with SW update like this. I am now back in very old SW version and nothing helps. Only thing I have not tried is the older Slicer, I dont know if it can make the difference here...anyone?

Sadly, I'm in the same boat.  Wasted the better part of a day before narrowing the issue to the idler pulley not lining up with the bontech gear.  It's just not applying any significant pressure on the filament, so it cannot load or unload.  I have a slightly modified (for TPU) MMU2s that was working very well prior to the upgrade.  I tried changing the homing sensitivity to 5, 6, and 7, but nothing I do fixes the idler alignment issue.

RE: MMU2S firmware update success rate poll

I too experience problems upgrading to the latest firmware on my MK3S+ and MMU2S.  I found downgrading to 3.12.2 and 1.0.6 got me back in business.  Curiously, I stopped receiving messages on the printer stating there is a new version of firmware available and that I should upgrade.  FWIW, I'm using the latest version of the slicer.

Also, this is the first time I've had a problem with a firmware upgrade, and I've done a fair number on this printer over the years.  So, I wouldn't be too quick to crucify Prusa over one buggy upgrade.  That said, they do need to get this figured out quickly - less than 10% success rate on an upgrade doesn't leave a good impression.

I will be honest.  I am leery of upgrading the MMU2S firmware for fear of breaking something.

For as little as I use it anymore (maybe once in past 9 months) it works acceptably well.  I consider it to be in the Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It state.

I actually use it regularly and have had little trouble with it.  I'll be interested to see what the MMU3 upgrade changes.

RE: MMU2S firmware update success rate poll

When trying to flash the MMU2, I get the following message. I contacted support and they said "you need to try flashing the MMU over and over again and it should eventually succeed".  Tried 50 more times (yes I counted). Failed every time. Guess I won't be upgrading the firmware anytime soon.

Flashing Original Prusa Multi Material 2 & 3 Upgrade (bootloader), looking for VID/PID 0x2c99/3 or 0x2c99/4 ...Found VID/PID 0x2c99/4 at `COM7`, rebooting the device ...Original Prusa Multi Material 2 & 3 Upgrade (bootloader) device not found after reboot

RE: MMU2S firmware update success rate poll

I haven't had a single successful multi-color print.  The printer mostly throws 4306 errors and not when it makes sense either.  Just randomly while printing the MMU will start flashing and say it has a 4306 error and needs a reset but once it does it no reset ever solves the problem only a complete restart after powering everything down.  It typically gets through a few hours and then does this.  So I have to scrape it off, start over, and half the time I have to fight the Idler unable to home error just to get it printing.

RE: MMU2S firmware update success rate poll

Just flashed the printer (MK3S+) and MMU2 to current (as of this post) firmware with Firmware Updater via OctoPrint and so far so good.

Printer went just fine, had it up and running in minutes sans MMU. MMU had a hang on the flash, but was able to recover and worked the second time.

RE: MMU2S firmware update success rate poll

Got a lot of rattle at startup after flashing with MMU3_3_0_1 and no MMU visible (N/A) at the screen.

Downgraded both the printer and the MMU2 back to 3.12.2 and 1.0.6 and it seems to work again.

Hopefully in any near future, a decent FW for the MMU2 will be published!
