HELP: Which firmware for the MK3 (not 3S) upgrade to MMU2S?

I recently received my MMU2S upgrade kit for my original i3 MK3, and assembled it. Now I've gotten to the step where I need to update the firmware on both the printer and the MMU2S unit.

Looking on the downloads page, there is a category for the "ORIGINAL PRUSA I3 MK3", and a category for the "ORIGINAL PRUSA I3 MK3S/MK2.5S MULTI MATERIAL 2S", and a category for the "ORIGINAL PRUSA I3 MK3/MK2.5 MULTI MATERIAL 2.0", but no category for those of us who upgraded from I3 MK3 to MMU2S.

Which firmware should I be using?

The MMU2S kit should have included the parts for you to rebuild you extruder as the MK3S. Did you not do that? If you did then you need the MK3S/MMU2S firmware bundle. If you didn't then the printer still needs the MK3 firmware. What follows is pure speculation on my part, so use it as a starting place for your own research.

For the MMU firmware the only physical difference between the MMU2 and MMU2S is the addition of the buffer. Based on that my expectation is that there is no difference between the 2 firmwares (but I have not compared to confirm/refute). Based on that I think you should just be able to use the MMU firmware in the MK3 bundle. Similarly I expect you should be able to download the MK3S bundle and grab the MMU firmware out of it and use that.

When I was considering going back to the MK3 and using the MMU with it I was not planning to reflash my  MMU (I had already flashed it to the latest firmware at the time I built it).

Interesting! Thanks for the tip, and the quick response!

The MMU2S kit should have included the parts for you to rebuild you extruder as the MK3S. Did you not do that?

I followed the instructions (Specifically, step 10 of this guide), but as I understand it, the MK3S has another PINDA probe, magnets, and a steel ball as part of the filament detector, whereas my kit only swaps out the MK3 detector for the MK3S IR detector (no magnets, no steel ball, no additional PINDA). So my understanding is that the filament detector is completely different (no idea if the firmware accounts for this). The instructions also don't explicitly state anything along the lines of "Congratulations, now you have an MK3S". So I don't actually know what I have anymore :-$.

I guess I would worry less if I knew for a fact that I could just upload any old firmware and find the right one through trial-and-error, but I don't have any clue if that's possible without somehow bricking my printer.

Yes switching from the laser sensor to the IR sensor means you now have a MK3S. How the IR sensor is used differs between if it is configured to work with the MMU or not. For the MMU the ball and magnets are not installed and the sensor is instead tripped by the arm on the idler door.

So you want the MK3S/MMU2S bundle.

Thanks gnat! I installed the MK3S / MMU2S firmware, and after much swearing and factory resetting, it works! (kind of).

If, for the sake of argument, I wanted to remove the MMU2 for some reason, and use the printer without it, are there instructions somewhere for how to downgrade?

(Asking for a friend, and totally not because the filament switching only works about ten percent of the time.)
