Extruder filament sensor ignored while printing multimaterial?

My MMU2 is still somewhat fussy and will occasionally fail to load a color. Yet the printer's behaviour is to continue to print nothing until the next color switch. Why does my MK3 filament sensor in the extruder not detect that there is either no filament or that the filament is not moving? This worked fine on this printer before I added the MMU2. The natural response would be for the MMU2 hardware to retry loading the filament and if that still fails signal for user attention.

More broadly, wouldn't using the extruder filament sensor make the gear calibration unnecessary? The MMU2 could feed the filament rapidly until the extruder sensor picked it up, then slowly in steps until the extruder was able to move the filament detectably.

if the filament laser sensor was reliable, prusa might turn it on

at the moment, it's not reliable!
