Anyone using 3.9.0 BETA firmware?

I have PLA working really reliably but am still strugglng to get PETG to reliably go the distance without intervention.  My problems is that I have occasionally long strings with the PETG, and occasionally this causes loading problems. (The long string folds bag on the way in, and then it clogs the bowden tube).

I see the new 3.9.0 (Beta) firmware for the MK3S activates the cutting blade on the selector:

https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware/releases

Has anyone tried this firmware yet?  Is the blade (more) effective at cutting strings with this upgrade?

I would wait; it's noted there is a pending update to the cutter design so the blade doesn't jam/get out of alignment. I wouldn't try to use it before the new parts are released.

Try to use the feeder further apart (1-5, 1-3-5) in case you're printing with less then 4 colors.

Hi,

Out of curiosity I tested the new selector and 3.9.0 rc1 fw, you can find the new parts on github, https://github.com/prusa3d/Original-Prusa-i3/tree/MMU2   3 new parts, Selector Finda, blade holder cover and Front PTFE holder.

At first sight they only made a better housing for the blade and a hole through the Finda drilling to acces the ball.

Only tested in manual mode (MENU --> CUT FILAMENT), did the cut on all 5 filaments, on the five tips only 2 fell in the mmu2 tray, the 3 other have fallen in the PTFE holder screw holes, one tip a little bit longer got stuck between selector and PTFE holder has caused an issue.

As I print since a long time multicolor object only in PETG I gained experience and made some mods to manage the PETG strings, I my opinion the blade cutter is not realy the solution, it is just a nice idea but there is still a lot of work to be done.

I think longer term the goal of the cutter is not a first line but rather to cut off a tip if the first load fails (since most often said failure cause is a fat or stringy tip)

After the first failde test of the new filament cutter, with the tips being trapped in the screw holes, I changed the Front PTFE holder design, just made a cut at the bottom to open the holes to ensure the tips to fall straight in the mmu2 tray.

Works fine in manual mode, remains to be seen if it works during a print in automotic mode, I will wait on the final 3.9.0 fw before testing.

Do you have an stl of your new ptfe holder design? I would like to test that.

I just printed all the parts with your custom front part. And indeed cutting works perfect now with the beta firmware when cutting manualy.

Just started my first long 9 hour testprint on this beta firmware let's see how it behaves.

@ruben-w

Let us know if you had loading issues recovered by the cutter.

RE: Anyone using 3.9.0 BETA firmware?

The cuttings works good. But now i have the issue that the fillament sometimes doesn't load in the extruder. I believe it's because there is no longer a pointy tip in de filament and that causes the bondtech gear not to grip the filament. I tried some different tension on the idler but that didn't help. Any tips on how to solve that?

fixed the extruder loading also. The bondtech gear was just a tiny bit out of alignment. I am even printing ninjaflex now succesfully.

I have not been following MMU news for a long while.

Can anyone kind enough to tell me exactly which parts have to be printed and replaced? (I've downloaded the stls. Please point to me which file to print. Thanks in advance. )
