Why is "Extra Loading Distance" set to -13 by default?

If I'm understanding the purpose of the "Extra Loading Distance" parameter, it tells the printer to push a little more filament through on load in case the filament doesn't wind up loading as far as it should.

The default setting is -13mm, which means that when loading the printer will push 13mm less filament than you would expect.

Using a negative value makes no sense. I see some others have set this to values ranging from 0 to -8, but it seems to me that it should be positive not negative if you're going to use it at all.

Any thoughts? Is this a mistake in the printer profile (like the 3mm/s default loading speed)? Or does it work in some strange and mysterious way I don't understand?

Well it is basically a bowden system. On a bowden setup you have to increase the retraction compared to a direct drive system because the system behaves more like a "long spring". It is even more extreme with flexible filaments that is why I opened a github issue with a feature request for "per filament extra loading distance".

Hmmm...That may be how the MMU2 behaves but it's really not clear to me if the parameter is telling the MMU how to load, or telling the slicer how the MMU firmware is hard coded to load..

I tried setting the parameter to zero and got a bunch of load failures so it must be doing something.

Just my guess. When you load, you want to load no more than needed, otherwise you'll get grinding. When you unload, you want to unload more than needed to be really sure the filament makes it up past the Bondtech gears and won't be stuck in them when the MMU tries to pull on it.

So maybe it makes more sense to think of it as "Extra unloading distance +13mm" instead of "Extra loading distance -13mm", but it's effectively the same thing.

Don't know neither.

I set it to zero and have no problem.

This reflect a major problem with MMU. The various settings in the slicer is poorly explained.
There is no official tutorial or manual to explain how these factors work.
For example, if the tip is too stringy, what should I adjust? if the tip is too bulky, what should I adjust? What to adjust if I want to print flexible or soluble materials?
Yes, there are pop up descriptions of the settings but the provided information is often too ambiguous and not useful for trouble shooting.
People are just playing around now with common sense, blind guess and trial and error.

+1 to this for sure.

I have a suspicion that many of the parameters will turn out to not matter very much, but were included because someone thought they might matter.
