Tell the printer to ignore the MMU2s and load directly to extruder?

Hello all,

I have a problematic filament (and sadly, tons of it) that is very hard to pull through the tubes. It would be ideal if I could just disconnect the tube directly on top of the extruder, ignore the loader completely, insert it by hand and print only unsing this filament.

The "load to nozzle" option does still use the loader, though, correct? So that wouldn't work?  Can I just slice an object differently to tell the printer to ignore the MMU2s?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Depends on what you want to print. Single filament print? Then disconnect the MMU2S power cable, bypass the MMU2S and you can print as without MMU2S. If you want to print with multiple filaments using MMU2S and bypassing only single of them then I am not aware about any solution capable to do this.

Yeah, now and then I just want to print one single filament that is not loaded (and I don't want to load) into the MMU2s. Though disconnecting the MMU2s sounds awfully hard just for that. Bummer if there is no other way to print without doing that.

The easiest way to deactivate the MMU2 is to switch off the printer and disconnect the data cable on the back of the MMU2. After switching on the printer, it no longer sees MMU2 and works as in single mode.

remove the connector on the far left.

One of my impending 'upgrade' projects, when I finish with a current print project, is to install a switch to break the power to the MMU2S.  Right now I am simply unplugging the power connector, as above.

In the prints section there is a nice little switch housing which bolts right to the frame, and I printed this out in Prusa orange PETg.

I'll post photos of it when I get it done, but you should be able to search the prints and get this piece.

When I want to print with a single filament while bypassing the MMU (e.g. burning off scraps) my steps are:

  1. Find small scrap of filament (~6")
  2. Remove PTFE (and festos if needed) between MMU and extruder.
  3. Slice object as normal for MMU2 Single
  4. Start print and select a tool with no filament loaded.
  5. Insert the small scrap into the selector to trip the FINDA.
  6. Insert the filament into the extruder.

The catch is that you have to pay attention to how much filament you have as the FINDA catches the runout with the MMU installed.

@gnat

Also a possibility, but somewhat more complex to implement:
I'm working with Octoprint and have written a script which allows me to disable and enable the MMU2 (with PrusaSlicer over Raspi) by controlling the TX and RX lines with a 3.3V relay and resetting the printer. Some manual work remains nevertheless. The PTFE tube between the MMU2 and the extruder has to be removed and remounted by hand.
