Questions about the new MMU

Just ordered the MK2.5 upgrade kit, now I'm interested in MMU2.0 too 😆
From the first videos / descriptions it does like a very solid unit which is well designed to tackle the MMU 1.0 issues.
However.. Would like to get some confirmation this MMU actually is a great upgrade w.r.t. usability, reliability and print quality.

Some questions:

  • how to load the filament, how more complicated does it get for single color prints? How will other slicers handle this?
  • how easy is it to swap back to the original single extruder? E.g. just remove the PTFE tube from the main extruder and slice with the 'non-MMU' preset?
  • when the cut takes place (as far as I understand this happens only when after filament swap there is a block), where does the cut off piece end up?
  • what are the options of relocating the MMU unit? Can it be put on top of an enclosure by extending the PTFE tube?

The MMU has manual controls on it so you can select or load the proper filament for a single extruder gcode file without having to completely remove the feeding assembly. That said, if you wanted to remove the MMU it should be as simple as disconnecting the tube from the extruder and printing as normal.

Will anyone know if Slic3r would have a feature like a random filament selection to add to a print, either to help use up left over spools of filament or make random rings of colour on your model? like with the Palette+ .

I didn't think about it but it's a really good idea to be able to feed the extruder with almost empty spools and don't have to change them manually !
