Printer running "Dry". Stops extruding filament, and keeps running

I have MMU2S, and I am only using one white filament to print.
For a 5 inch high print, it prints well about 1.5 inches and thereafter runs "dry" . i.e. no filament comes out.

I checked the alignment of gears on extruder and is aligned.
Slightly tightened the screw

The 24 hour print printed for 14 hours and there after ran Dry.

Please advise.

The white filament and its additives could be a reason.

possible causes:

  • enclosure ?
  • ambient room temp
  • retractions on small print
  • too long a retraction value
  • printing hot end temp?

Sounds to me like a possible filament compatibility issue. Believe it or not, sometimes the filament itself makes trouble. Did you try your print with a different filament? Better to try with a different filament. It's the shortest way to get more information.

@david-a66

Thanks.

The printer is open on a desk

Ambient temperature is 23.5, indoors

Haven’t tried with a different filament.

it also is accompanied with a “ticking” sound, before the “drying out” and then ticking stops and the printer keeps running dry.

@gerardo-w

I’m regards to filament being an issue what or where it could cause the drying out?

Other suggestion i am reading are:

clean the ‘possibly’ clogged nozzle.

some sort of “heat break”?

If you check the forum for clogged nozzles or clicking noise coming out of the extruder you will find a lot of information.

Since your printer is working at least at the beginning of the print, the nozzle can be only partially clogged. Means it works at least for 50%. So why would it go from 50 to 100% clogged nozzle almost on the beginning of the print?

Does your part need a lot of retractions? Are the amount of details getting higher as the Z-hight gets higher?

Once again, in my opinion trying a different filament is a short cut before taking other kind of measures that simply are much more time consuming.

Thanks for support.
It did turn out to be a clogged nozzle. Local Filament supplier had given me a “Purge Filament” apparently for cleaning nozzle, but that made it worse. Eventually high temperature (290C) and few loading cycles helped.
currently trying a different filament the same print to conclude if the white filament was an issue.

I am printing the jet engine from Thingiverse.

Thanks

RE: Printer running "Dry". Stops extruding filament, and keeps running

Hi all

Could you please help me, it seems I have the same problem here with my recently installed mmu2s.

As I had troubles with filament loads i started to print upgrade parts in single mode with Prusa PETG Orange. But after about 2mm height the printer stops extruding filament and continues running.

First i thought it was maybe a clogged nozzle, changed to a brand new nozzle but still same effect. As well with another print exactly the same issue. And the prints were actually very simple parts, nothing to fancy. (see picture)

Does someone could please help me? I start getting bored with this mmu2s upgrade......

Cheers

Markus

can you clarify:

- how many filaments printing?

- what filament and temperature?

- do you hear clicking sound before the filament runs out

- does the filament runs out and printer keeps running ?

the stringing in the picture is a different problem.

  • Just one, prusa petg orange on spool 1
  • 240/250 as standard settings which never made problems before mmu2s
  • can't tell as I wasent present when the filament stopped. but when i came to the printer it was still running maybe 5 layers above but no special noise was coming from the printer then
  • to me it apears that the strings start when the filament is getting less and doesnt adhere enought to the print below befor it completly runs out of filament

I have sliced this part and another which had the same issue with the prusa slicer mmu single mode.

with a quick test print, exactly same situation, not the stringing, but no more filament and just running empty. And now there was a clear clicking noise i quess from the extruder like in a 1-2 second frequency.

In this case i took the exact same settings from a previos MK3S print i did with the same petg just another part and all went smooth. so it looks to me that it is a hardware problem at the extruder, or what do you think?

the clicking and stopped extruding in the middle of the print looks like clogging, but the strange thing, yesterday evening i took a new nozzle and it hapened directly with the new nozzle

I would recommend few options, in sequence:

- raising the temperature to 285 degrees and then loading the filament and if it loads continue flushing out the filament 4-5 times by answering ‘No’ on the display. this would clean out the debris in the nozzle.

- ‘very’ slightly (half a turn) tighten the ‘spring’ screws on MMU2 and the extender to ensure when element is being pulled and pushed the gears have enough grip and doesn’t slip.

- Clean excessive plastic residue from the MMU2 setup and extender gears ensuring that the extender gears are well aligned with the incoming filament.

- stringing could be resolved either by just increasing temperature or slowing the speed or combination depending on the filament also.

@bhuwan-j

Hi,

Thanks for all these tips, tried them all and inclusiv the PID calibration and cold pull to clean the nozzle, but the same issue after 30min into every print.

What I recognized then, that I for some reason had way more drag in the bowdens. Actualy i replaced the 2mm inner diameter bowden from mmu2 to the extruder with a 2.5mm festo but not out of ptfe what increased the drag additionally.

I started now a benchy print with having the filament directly from the spool into the extruder, skiping the mmu. And all went well.

I looks like I really need to tackle that drag issue
