New method to change models from single to multi-filament

Mosaic have come up with a new program: "Face Painter".

This program allows you to open an STL and preset the extruder by "painting" the triangle faces with the extruder to use:

In this instance, I have loaded the Moai model, painted the model with extruder 5 (blue) and then painted the ears with extruder 1 (red).

The model is then saved as a single STL file with the embedded extruder information.

KISSlicer Premium reads the extruder information:

Here's the result of the slice (one layer chosen at random):

All that remains is to save the G-code and print.

Peter 🙂

It's finally not vaporware? Awesome.

Have you tried it with PrusaSlicer yet?

Will have to grab it and see if it works better with a model I'm trying to break up than MeshMixes is doing.

No, sorry, but it will not work with PrusaSlicer which requires separate STL files.  KISSlicer has always been able to select individual meshes and now effectively, by triangles.

Here's the coloured model, just in case you want to try.  I think it will ignore the extruder selection.

I have had this model on my PC for over 3 years now; sorry, I cannot remember where it came from 🙁

One more thing...

Face Painter can also paint textures onto a triangle which is something that will be available from KISS in the near future; at the moment, KISS texturing only works on non-horizontal surfaces of the complete model, based on random or bitmap images.

Do you have a link for Face Painter? I can't seem to find info on it.

There's links on the KISSlicer site: http://www.kisslicer.com/premium-version.html

Ah. I thought you meant that it was a stand alone tool from Mosaic.

I saw you are credited for the MK3/MMU profiles, but the link (FTP FTW! 😀 🤗) doesn't seem to work.

Having to pay for it just to see if it works is kinda annoying since I've been happy with Slic3r.

Since you use KISS already, what are its benefits over Slic3r/PrusaSlicer? Areas where the reverse is true?

There's some hints in the 4th post of this thread: https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/english-forum-general-discussion-announcements-and-releases/prusaslicer-vs-cura/

I just tested the profile link and it is working, althoughI haven't uploaded the Mk3S profiles as yet.

Looking forward to messing with this but that feature appears to be behind a bit of a pay wall at the moment. here's to hoping more things like it start to appear!

Yeah I went to look at it and was willing to plunk down the money to try it, but for something using the KISS acronym I found it anything but and gave up. I'll continue to pull my hair out over MeshMixer for now... ☹
