Mounting off-printer
Hi all,
I wondered if anyone has experience mounting their MMU2(S) somewhere aside from top of the printer and what considerations that involves. My MK3S is in a cabinet and the MMU2 requires enough attention that having all the access points at the back of the printer is awkward. It's quite nice having the printer at chest height for ergonomics so that will stay. However, even changing filament requires a quite a bit of fiddling to feed into the retraction buffer and any "user attention" requires rotating the whole printer while powered, etc.
My thought was to have the MMU2 mounted on the base of the shelf next to the printer (I'll design a 3D printed shock mount to reduce vibration) to allow easy access to the idler release screws and have a longer reverse bowden tube feeding into the extruder carriage. The spools and buffer will be on the shelf underneath (think Ultimaker style) - I use an RMU-like tower which works well and is relatively space efficient.
The main change would be an extra 1m or so of tubing. Do I need to perform a calibration of the filament path lengths? I assumed that the current firmware is quite dumb in that once the FINDA triggers, it will just feed into the extruder until the IR sensor triggers, and then it pushes a known distance forward to the nozzle (and vice versa for retraction).
Thanks!
RE: Mounting off-printer
Like you, my printer is in a enclosure and I don't want to fight with it. I have seen many posts where the MMU is outside the enclosure. Search the forums. There are settings in the slicer than need to be changed. I have not assembled my MMU yet as I am still getting familiar with the printer but it will be mounted outside the enclosure.
