MMU2 guidance on order or waiting

Just as the subject states I'm wondering if I should consider ordering it which will still be a good long wait or waiting awhile longer to see if some of the issues people have had are getting resolved by then.

Ok so I haven't been printing for an overly long time at this point. So back when I first decided to get the mk3 I reasoned that from everything I was reading it had the best feature set for the price I was willing to pay and of couse even then there was talk of an mmu2 and I thought well you know if I get into this enough I can upgrade it and get this mmu, if not I'm not overly invested like I would have been for some of the other choices that have multiple extruders and such. So its been in the back of my mind for some time now and I really would like to order it.

But my main concern here is that this product is not actually ready for the general user (as in me). I keep hearing all this talk about what people have and haven't done including diving into the coding of the software itself, to just making a few minor adjustments on certain components, and all the way up to major modifications. I will state flat out that when I bought the mk3 I went in expecting that as long as I properly followed all the instructions while assembling it that once I turned it on it would be ready to go and it was. I understand that the forum is largely devoted to helping people resolve issues so it could be somewhat biased on a negative tone, but it greatly concerns me that if I buy this that I will spend way more time and effort trying to troubleshoot issues than I'm willing to spend. I mean I would love to start printing in multi colors and using soluable supports and all the things the mmu can offer me but I don't want to receive this rip apart a functional printer only to find I can't successfully print anything.

What things should I know/ consider in this decision?

Re: MMU2 guidance on order or waiting

Prusa has a really good 90 day return policy if that helps ease your mind. If you choose that it's not for you all you need to do is open a live chat and tell them you'd like to return it. They'll send you a shipping label, you send it back, and they'll send you a refund when they get it back.

I gave up on my MMU 2.0 after owning it for nearly 90 days. Prusa was wonderful trying to offer support but I was not willing to invest anymore time in figuring out how to get it to work properly.

Re: MMU2 guidance on order or waiting

The Mk3 is my first printer and I ordered it 12/3. I ordered the MMU at the same time without having read the forum about it. I simply trusted that their outstanding reputation on the printers themselves applied to the MMU too.

I have since not been liking what I've been reading while I wait (and my Feb delivery has now been pushed to March :x). I've been getting tempted to cancel the order, but I hear just as bad reports for the more expensive Palette 2. I also understand that forums tend to attract "bad press" since that is where people come for help, so I'm still trying to bet on their reputation and hope it won't be as bad as it sometimes sounds.

I'm not going to waste time with it though. Either I can get it working (when it shows up) in a couple of weeks (2 weekends and some week nights) or it's going back.

I'll be bummed if I do have to send it back as I've been looking forward to MM prints, but I really like how the MK3 itself has been performing for me so I don't want to end up putting myself off by fighting with the MMU too much.

My suggestion (if you have the money to let them hold for an unclear amount of time) would be to go ahead and order it and get on the waiting list. You can always change your mind and all you've lost is a bit of interest on your money. If you wait 3 months and then order it with there possibly still being a 2-3 month wait, then you've lost an extra 3 months you could be printing with it.

Keep in mind that my post was not intended to try and scare anyone. I wanted to simply let you know that you can feel comfortable knowing if you don't have a great experience you can return it very easily for a refund if you're not satisfied.

The key word of course being can not does. I mean I get it this is a fairly complex thing to get right but I just wish I had more confidence in the out of the box experience. I mean ultimately I think I'm going to get this I'm just debating on ordering now to get it sooner than if I wait more and then wait another 3+ months on top of that.

On a somewhat different vein how much extra height will the mmu add to the printer and or how much extra clearance should I put in an enclosure. I'm starting down the road of building an enclosure for the printer for abs, right now I'm just in the initial research phase to decide what I actually want out of it but considering I intend to have this at some future point I want to make sure I give myself enough leeway for the future.

I don't think it adds much more than a full 1kg spool of filament. Once thing I'd suggest is wait before you put your printer into an enclosure. You're going to be opening and closing the MMU several times to troubleshoot it. You'll be hating life every time you have to pull apart your enclosure just to get to the MMU to resolve an issue.

Re: MMU2 guidance on order or waiting

Well I decided to go ahead and order this after all. I'm really crossing my fingers that I can be one of those few lucky ones that really doesn't have any major issues out of the box. I just kind of figured that there will be at least 3+ more months of others receiving this and posting issues and or solutions in addition to the stuff that is already out there. I'm going to have faith that this will be figured out.

Any initial advice about what to look out for or things I should try to do as I'm going through the assembly process?

The long wait has begun...

Wait. Are you saying I should stop planning that 200mm mixed media print with over 3000 tool changes as my first print? 😕 😆

Actually probably really good advice to remember when it does show up and I know I'll be a bit too eager to just "get on with it" 😉

Only 3200 ?
I had a print that had 4000 tool changes with no user assistance required. 😀

Maybe the upgrade to the MMU 2S will make it easier to hit the big numbers for everyone !

From today's blog post: https://www.prusaprinters.org/original-prusa-i3-mk3s-and-mmu2s-release-sl1-and-powder-coated-sheets-update/#2
We are still waiting for some parts, but we will be able to start shipping the MMU2S over the course of next week. And once more – ALL MMU2 users will get vouchers for this upgrade FOR FREE by the end of this week.

Anxiously waiting for the upgrade voucher to hit my inbox.

Back to the OP's question, I would order now to get in the queue.

I ordered it on 2/8 but this news makes me feel so much better in my decision

and all already placed orders will be automatically switched to MMU2S

And yes, if it isn’t clear from the previous lines: when you have an MK3 or MK2.5 and order the MMU2S, you are getting the MK3S/MK2.5S upgrade along with it as well! In other words – MMU2S is MMU2 + MK3S/MK2.5S upgrade + filament buffer.

So not only will it automatically come as the mmu2s but it will give me the mk3s upgrade as part of that as well, so in essence I'm getting a the latest printer in addition to getting the most current multi color printer 😀

I personally plan to do as close to a full plate print as the wipe tower will allow with 3000 or more changes for my first print, you know start small 😆

I do have to say, doing a high tool change print does make you learn allot about your mmu 😀

Yeah well. Finally got it printing last night. Single filament Benchy ran fine.

2 color Benchy got through the rear deck area and was just starting the rear gunwales when it decided to have tool change issues (of course like 10 minutes after my last check before bed...). Mashed buttons and gave it dirty looks this morning and it ran for another 20 minutes (and multiple tool changes) only to be stopped again.

Without any advice in the First Prints thread I started my assumption is that the selector is binding up on something which means I need to pull that driver which I guess means I'm going to lose this print 😣

Is your MK3 already upgraded to a S or will you be doing that too?

I had to do the S upgrade too so my approach was to not initially connect the MMU up. After doing the S upgrade to the printer I disabled the filament sensor (don't know that I strictly needed to do that) and got the printer dialed back in that way first (turned out to be doubly a PITA as I rebuilt my Y axis too). Once I had it all happy as a MK3S I finally attached the MMU last night.

My plan for the MMU testing was a single color Benchy (worked well), 2 color Benchy (having issues, but it did a handful of tool changes successfully), and then a 5 color Benchy.
