MMU for single color change

Hi all,

I was one of the early users of the MMU and was so disappointed by its miserable reliability that I put it quickly back in the box - and had a very stable MK3 since.

Now as hopefully things have stabilized a bit (and the upgrade from Prusa is under way), I thought I might give it a try for single color changes. Like this one:

(how does insert image work here???)

OK. The scale in the image is a two color print. I inserted an M600 at the correct Z height and manually changed the filament. It might be useful if this worked unattended or if filaments would be changed if one spool it empty (although I doubt it works - filament ends are mostly bent and this hook will never go into a PTFE tube).

So - what about a single color change somewhere? As I understand it, this would generate a wipe tower for all of the print?

Also, I don't have space for the original buffer setup. I'd like to have two spools on top of the frame and feed from there. Could this work?

What about single color prints - will they get much more complicated (unreliable?) when I have the MMU mounted?

Attachment removed

- Martin

RE: MMU for single color change

I asked the same question. The answer to me is no.

In the new Prusa slicer 2.0, you can

1. Select MK3 (without MMU). Add color change at a layer (a "+" button). Do the filament change by hand when it prompts you during printing.

2. Select MK3 with MMU. Print color parts as usual. But it needs purge tower.

3. Select MK3 with MMU Single. Click the + button too. At the point of "color change" , the machine will unload and load filament from the SAME filament selector.  How stupid !  Someone point out that you can upload the g-code to online color change program and download the updated g-code to do actual color change. But then what's the whole point of quality of life improvement in the new slicer?  Hope Prusa can correct this overlook soon.

RE: MMU for single color change

be in mmu mode

click on the object make a box modifier make it a box for now

make the box fit where you want the 2nd filament

hit slice and see if that's what you want.

you CAN turn off wipe tower. word of warning, you might get a blob.

BUT you can just leave the wipe tower on and the tower will stop after it changes color. (until a last spit at last level)

@toaf

Clever work around.

I think its better to keep the purge tower than having blobs and loose filament all around the place.

I still think the best way is a formal update of the slicer to enable layer color change for MMU machine. I am NOT asking for fully automatic filament change, I just what to change filament like they way it does in non-MMU machine. The only difference is that instead of changing filament by hands for non-MMU machines, MMU users should be allowed to select where the selector should move next to start the next loading filament routine. All the hardwares are there, it just needs better coding.
