RE: I'm Considering getting an MMU2 but...

I agree. I'm completely over it. I've found it to be utterly unreliable and have spent hours and hours standing next to the machine waiting for it to do all it's thinking in between trying and failing to load a filament.

UTTER WASTE OF MONEY

Prusa...if you're going to sell a product....at least make sure that the damn thing works.

I've just downloaded and flashed the latest firmware update thinking perhaps now they've got the thing to work - I shouldn't have got my hopes up.

The way I see it, I'm buying a product that should work. Not a BETA product...one that says it can do something that it mostly cant. That's just not good enough.

I'm sick of hearing about how good PRUSA is. This is total crap.

When it's working it's great. But when it's doing all this load/unload/load/unload...flash lights/restart etc etc etc interminably....it's just unacceptable. I'm considering selling it, except I'd feel bad for the person I'm selling it to.

So - on that note....does anyone know how I can get it to work without the MMU? Do I just flash a different firmware or do I have to make a hardware change too?

@k7zpj, I am not sure how to do a factory reset. Under settings>system there is a delete all local files. Is this a factory reset? I am not finding anything under settings that says 'reset'.

This link covers how to do the reset and redo the calibration: https://support.mosaicmfg.com/Guide/Re-running+Calibration/10

I looked at the photos on your facebook post and saw the problem with the splice.

Before resetting and redoing the calibration,  you might want to see the filament will splice two pieces from the same roll just to help rule out incompatible filament as the cause.    You can try pulling / cutting a little filament from one of the rolls.  Use the roll as one color and then the piece that you cut off as the second color.

I use this model to do purge testing, but would work for doing a same filament splice test.  https://www.printables.com/model/179839-two-color-purge-volume-test

Print just enough to see if the splices are working.   Kind of a long shot, but might give a clue to the solution.

I don't have preferences under the settings button. I have looked at every option under settings and I don't see anything that says reset.

Thanks for looking at the FB post. I have printed successfully with these two filaments before, using the same rolls.

Here is the right menu path for the P3:  Home Screen > Printers > Select Printer > Remove Printer

When you have one printer, the menu changes from Remove Printer to Reset Palette.

Sorry that I didn't check the Mosaic document closer.

The closest I can find to following the article on re-running the calibration is to delete the printer profiles. Would that accomplish the same thing?

I had 2 printer profiles. I removed one and the remaining one still says remove, not reset. I tried powering off the P3 and powering on again, it still says remove. Do I remove it?

Bruce, thanks for your help. I needed to drag the system menu upward to access the reset.

@k7zpj  The factory reset did not solve it. Still getting inconsistent results from the splice tuning and the splices for printing. I'm complete with this. I just wanted to let you know and thank you for your help. This is an art form for me and in the meantime I have been designing pieces that just need simple color changes at layers and I'm happy with going in that direction.

@sylviatrilling

In stead of totally giving up on the P3.  You might want to try to wait and see approach.   Put it aside for a few weeks and then check the forums to see if more of the problems have been resolved.  I do most mechanical parts, but I do get that the P3 (even when working) is getting in the way of the creative process instead of helping it.

I went through the same process with the MK3/MMU/MMU2.  The MMU2 almost when into the trash bin.  I gave it another shot when the chimney and the IR sensor was added to the extruder.

Good luck and keep designing and printing.

RE:

Just when I was planning to give the P3 another try next week. My first stab turned into a mechanical design issue, with filament coming out of the P3 everywhere but the outgoing PTFE tube. The second ended with my inability to get consistently good splices. From this conversation it doesn't sound like it's gotten better but I'll give it another try anyway. And if it's a third strike it goes on the same trash heap as the MMU2.

"Your mileage may vary" is a good way to describe the current state of the P3.   There are some people that are having really good luck with it and for some it is just rubbish.

I have found that it is really finicky about what filament is used and if the filament is dry.  So far, I have found that Prusament has been working best for me.  Also I had a problem where the end of the buffer tube got flared out and it was causing resistance to the buffer tube moving towards the output which caused jams in the buffer.   But all of this is YMMV.

For me, it was a lot easier to get the MMU2 working than the P3 due the complexity of the P3.   Yet another YMMV thing.

Exactly. I get caught up in trying to solve a problem and it is good to do that sometimes. Then I remember, for me this is an art form. It is supposed to be about playing and having fun. When the hassle/fun ration goes up it is time to evaluate how I want to spend my time. I want something that is reliable. I don't want to spend my time replacing jammed PTFE extruder tubes. I just put down a deposit on the XL which will be at least a year away, but that will be my next attempt at multiple colors on the same layer. We will see how reliable it is.

YMMV, yeah that sounds like a good way to describe it. I just have better things to do than tinker with hardware just to make it do what it is advertised to do. With the MMU I was fooled by the rock solid performance of all my Minis and Mk3S but the MMU is clearly not in the same league. With the P3 I clearly did not know  what effort splice tuning would involve, especially as I have many different filament types and colors and combinations there of in rotation all the time. I just have one model that I know would sell nicely if I could get 2 color print to work because it's just too many filament swaps for a manual approach.
