First MMU2 Print

I just finished assembling and testing my MMU2, and the test print completed.

There were a couple of hiccups in the assembly. There's a set of shafts that need to be inserted through bearings for the selector, and the shafts I got didn't quite fit. On the advice of Prusa support, I whanged on them a few times with a hammer and got it together. And once it was together, the MMU2 wasn't positioning the selector properly. The fix was simple--hit the reset button on the MMU2--but it makes me think there's still a few glitches in the firmware (to be fair, the firmware is not quite final yet, the latest being RC2).

After seeing how the filament spools work, I don't think there's going to be many issues with positioning them on top of an enclosure or off to the side or whatever. You can probably even put extensions on the feed tubes and still make it work (again, I haven't tested this). It will make loading filament a bit more of a nuisance however.

I'm planning to move the printer back to my workshop soon and use my overhead hanging filament holders. I don't think this will cause any problems.

Finally, there's a hidden calibration you should probably plan on doing: calibrating the Bowden length. It's buried on this page: https://manual.prusa3d.com/Guide/Status+LED+indications+explained/762?lang=en . I did this before trying to print on the advice of Prusa support, and my length was off by several millimeters. Going through this extra calibration step probably saved me an hour of troubleshooting.

Happy printing!

Anytime, would love to show off the new toy 😀

Unfortunately they don't tell you to do that in the build guide, which is why I mentioned it.

The “featured” smaller purge block still looks quite big especially as your print only has small colour changes. Any thoughts?

I have a few thoughts:

  • The block in the photo is mostly hollow, so don't take the size as indication of material.

  • I'm doing a test to compare the amount of waste from the MMU2 vs. the Palette, so when that's done I'll have a better idea of whether it's a lot of purge or not.

  • Observing the couple of prints so far, I think there's considerable room to tweak the purge settings. So far I've only been using default settings, and it looks like the defaults are very conservative (i.e. purge a lot). There's considerable flexibility to adjust purge for each pair of filaments even if it is a pain.

  • I'm also not using purge into infill (yet).

I realize this is off topic from your post. Please bare they me. As you are the one who told me to use the supplied gcode for mmu2 testing. I did. I got farther then I did trying to splice the sheep myself - sheep 85% complete b4 failure. I'll get it eventually.

But what I noticed however about the sheep that I hope u can confirm, because you are the only other guy I know who doesnt work for Prusa that has a MMU2 and has printed the supplied sheep gcode.......The supports for the sheep's under belly arent standard, in fact look like tree supports to me... can u confirm??

It's something like that, yes. I don't know how they generated the gcode.

Yea I didnt see a tree supports (or something similarly named) option in new version slic3r 1.14.0. But definetly not standard sli3r supports in mmu2 sheep gcode.

I haven't looked at the file myself as I don't have the MMU, but did they generate the supports like this:
